Re: Workshop storage rack

I also found that I needed to muck around with the settings a bit. I took a SWAG that 85A would be an ok starting point on 1/8" tubing with a 3/32" rod. Somehow that seemed a tad hot really, but it was a beginning. Indeed, that was on the tad-high side, as I blew through in a couple of pla...

Re: Workshop storage rack

There were family duties to be had today and so time wouldn't be as plentiful as I had hoped. Still, I managed to make some progress, however meager and slow-going it was. I found that although the tubing itself wasn't heavy, the length made it rather unwieldy. I had planned on at least installing a...

Re: Workshop storage rack

Ok so time was limited today, as I had watch-the-lil-un duty after work while the wife-eee did our almost-weekly shopping. I keep telling her that I'll do that but she wants out of the house for brief respites and thus insists on going. So I dragged the-son outdoors and attempted to have him help, t...

Re: Workshop storage rack

Well the casters arrived today: casters 1.jpg Funny that, as there was no tracking information. Caster City did get them here in three days though. Thus it is difficult to be too disappointed in that result. I find these casters quite favorable for this application! Rated at 900 lbs each (which is r...

Re: Workshop storage rack

I probably would be building it using 2x4s and framing lumber, but steel is nice too I suppose. Might be cheaper than framing lumber and ply wood these days. :D Yes, you'd better get crack'n! At my location I"m losing about 15 minutes of daylight each week. https://www.sunrisesunset.com/USA/ Y...

Re: Workshop storage rack

Now for the secondary "mystery" use that I alluded to in the first post. Well, part of the reason that I chose the height of this rack is because the majority of the types of stuff that I need to store underneath the rack would fit underneath a 5' rack. The other reason is that I want to b...

Re: Workshop storage rack

So that was the materials side of things. Now for the welding. I decided that I'd just 7018 this build, since the rack is unlikely to hold anything insanely heavy. Thus no need for 6010 is my point, and given the relative thinness of the 2" x 2" x 1/8" tubing, a good 7018 pass should ...

Workshop storage rack

So I took a lunch break today to head out to the local steel supplier that I use, then a stop by the local welding supply store. Put simply, my workshop has become (and been) too cluttered. And for a while now if I am honest. Just too many spare parts, some of them large, like hoods, fenders, etc. A...

Re: PrimeWeld TIG 225 adventure begins

Interesting. So it's a regulation thing then. Nice. Oh well, I'll have to give it some thought. This particular welding supply store has a form that you fill out, then they appear to run a credit check prior to establishing your account. Yeah. I'm not a fan of that if to speak openly. My score is 80...

Re: Plasma cutting project

After doing some testing last night (as mentioned in the previous post), I have decided that the 60A rated consumables that the CUT60 come with are decent-to-good quality. However in this context of cutting a roof, I think that a tip that yields a smaller footprint would be a better approach. And so...

Re: Plasma cutting project

The time out to me sounds like a ground issue. My cheap china plazzz has a pilot arc that will cut for about 3 or 4 seconds. But if it doesn’t sense a good ground it will extinguish. Heavy paint in the cutting area even if I have a bare metal ground is enough to make it happen. Think it has to do w...

Re: PrimeWeld TIG 225 adventure begins

During lunch today I stopped by the welding supply store to see about a bottle of argon. When it comes to bottles, the local store will either sell one to you or rent/lease it. For MIG, I purchased a bottle of 75-25. At the time I had plans of building a shorter welding cart. However soon afterwards...

Re: PrimeWeld TIG 225 adventure begins

Thanks LtBadd for the feedback. Well considering the general favorability for sharpening tungstens on an aluminum oxide wheel and the fact that I purchased one of those in addition to the diamond wheel, I would hazard to conclude that I should be set for a while in regard to this whole sharpening bu...

Re: Plasma cutting project

Well I had a rather long conversation regarding this project with a fella who does this for a living. He told me that they cut the hole in the roof from above, which has been my preference all along. The difficulty I've encountered with that scenario is transferring the cut lines from the bottom (wh...

Re: Plasma cutting project

Is there no way you could use a .040" cut-off wheel on an air die grinder from the top and put a stop disc on the cut-off disc to regulate your cut depth in the critical areas ? You'd still need to cover all glass, etc, but it would seem to require much less edge finishing to get the dimension...

Re: Plasma cutting project

More observations/thoughts regarding this project. Perhaps as much for me as anything, but I thought I'd post anyway for the sake of completion: 1) I don't think that magnets will be sufficient to hold the fence in place in this context. I may need to tack it in a few places and am already planning ...

Re: PrimeWeld TIG 225 adventure begins

So what I do, is for sharpening new 1/16" tungstens and touching up larger tungstens I use this, as well as polishing all tungstens. For getting the initial grind on 3/32"+ tungstens, I use a 6" bench grinder with a standard (rough-ish) aluminum oxide wheel to remove material fast. T...

Re: Plasma cutting project

Update- After work today I went to the outbuilding to see what was what. The very first thing I wanted to attempt was a cut in order to verify that the problem has persisted. It didn't. The CUT60 is back online, cutting as well as it did when I first received it. Wha-? The weather here is poor, so I...

Re: Plasma cutting project

Maybe I missed it, but did you encounter that shrieking when cutting another panel elsewhere? It's possible the air was blowing through a small hole in the backside (structure) of the panel and causing that sound. Maybe cut in an open area, single thickness to reproduce results? I'd even consider l...
