Thanks for the tips! I have struggled without any mentoring other than you tube.

Re: Undercut
Yeah your amp gauge is off looks like about 40 amps off. Give it 5 or 10 more and that weld bead will smooth out. Side note. If your long arcing then you need more amps then someone who holds close. But long arc usually leaves lots of spatter. I’m not seeing that. Slow down just a bit more with the...

Re: Undercut
Single pass with 3/32 7018. According to my amp gauge (which I think is wrong) I’m running 106 amps. I can’t keep from sticking striking the arc below that. I held longer on the top to try and fill in. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200902/629d1f7e75e806d1a9ae06de6d4c3535.jpg Sent from my iPhone...

Re: Undercut
Would you expect to make two passes to fill it with 3/32?Poland308 wrote:If it’s only 1/4 inch metal I’d be running 3/32 at about 80 amps.

Re: Undercut
Yes rod angle on 7018 is pretty forgiving you can push or pull it. It’s an all position rod. But arc length is much more critical to getting it to run right. Most common things I’ve found that create undercut with 7018 are, 1 not getting off the mill scale, 2 to fast of travel or not holding the si...

Re: Undercut?
The plates are cut at 90 degrees. I had the inside edges touching and tacked together.
So, I would have been better off doing a straight drag on the first pass and try to fill on the second?

Re: Undercut
Thank you.
Would rod angle make much difference?

Re: Undercut?
I won’t get discouraged, I’m just trying to learn as much as I can with each weld. I won’t have continuous welding projects to learn from.

Undercut?
What can I do to prevent undercut? I am welding 1/4” plate with 1/8” 7018. I started at 125 amps and kept dropping the amps until I couldn’t keep the rod from sticking. I ended at 109 amps. Should I be using a larger rod? Slower speed? I am still getting used to watching the puddle while trying to s...

Re: 1/4 Plate Warp
Tack some “strong backs” on the opposite side. This applies reversed force against the side you weld on. Critical when welding flat plates. Could I make those out 1/4” peace tackle perpendicular to the back surface? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk That will do fine Thank you. Sent from my iPhone...

Re: 1/4 Plate Warp
2 words. Heat Warps. Spread the heat around and limit how much you apply to one area. You can also use chill blocks on it also, to pull some of that heat out while you're welding. One thing on thick material is use adequate amps, if you have the amps low it will take a long time to heat the materia...

1/4 Plate Warp
I am new to welding. I have welded together some 1/4" x 6" bar stock for a winch mounting plate. I put multiple passes on some of the joints which seems to have caused the plate to warp. What can I do to avoid this in the future? If add multiple passes on the back side of the joint could i...
