Re: Quick question on tig welding 18gauge body panels

It all depends upon the filler wire size you plan to use whether a gap is a good idea, and what size gap. If you are nearly butted, then a 0.045 wire is a pretty good choice. I personally like to use Silicon Bronze wire when welding panels. It’s plenty strong, won’t rust, has very ductility, takes ...

Quick question on tig welding 18gauge body panels

When welding 18 gauge sheet metal have you all used those easy clamps that provide .030 inch gap? I am about to start this project and have messed around with my settings and different fit ups. I am using 1/8 copper on the back side to absorb the heat but I am worried that if I use those easy clamps...

Re: Help with new Welding Machine Setting

You guys are great! Thank you for all the responses, I learned more and understand a lot better with your input than watching stuff on it. It will be fun a frustrating to see what works and what doesn't. I don't hate the trigger that I have been using, but it has been extremely frustrating specially...

Re: Help with new Welding Machine Setting

I know I"m probably the lone exception, but I almost never use pulse, even on sheet metal. That's to include thin aluminum. I do backstep welds when I'm doing sheet if there's any length to the weld area. But that's about all I do. To be fair, I don't do autobody work, but it's not unlikely I ...

Help with new Welding Machine Setting

So my wife got me the new "Prime Weld Tig 225 AC/DC" I am super stoked to get it and start using it. for the last year I have been welding with an AMICO cs160 which is also what I learned to tig weld on. It was challenging at first due to it being a finger trigger set up and not foot pedal...

Re: Am I headed in the right direction with these welds

I appreciate it thank you. I am using a trigger finger. I have finally gotten use to it for the most part. It is still tuff at times. I have learned that I need to move quickly and use the lower end of the amp chart. I will try using the amps you suggested again. Last time I tried to practice with t...

Am I headed in the right direction with these welds

Just looking to see if I am headed in the right direction. Outside Corner Joint (is the back side penetration ok? To me it looks like it fused well, but I dont have anything to compare it to. 1/8 mild steel 3/32 thoriated 1/16 er70s6 12cfh / 8 cup 70 amp Strait beads 1/4 mild steel 125 Amp 12cfh / 8...

Re: Tungsten sharperner for a hobbiest who wants the good st

I just purchased the Eastwood tungsten grinder, It was 129.00 but on sale for 89.00. It has worked pretty awesome for me and very noticeable while I am welding now. It had good reviews too so I figured I couldn't go wrong.

Re: Practice beads on 1/2 and 1/4 inch steel

Yes I will be practicing Tig. My tig machine only goes to 200amps. I just didn't know if I would be able to get a weld pool going based on what the recommended amps were for that thickness. Looks like I will play with it at 140 amps. I will be using 1/16 er70s6/70s2 in both 3/32 and 1/16 Silicon bro...

Practice beads on 1/2 and 1/4 inch steel

I have a 2 plates of 15ft by 12" by 1/2" Cold Rolled Mild Steel and 3 plates of 15ft by 12" by 1/4" Cold Rolled Mild Steel I have been purchasing welding coupons to practice and it has been going good. I was thinking I could save a bunch of money for quite some time if I use my p...

Re: My first outside corner

If these settings are for Silicon Bronze, I think you’re way too hot. I just did a small project using 1/8” SilBr filler and used 45 amps. If those settings are for ER70, then for 3/32 filler and .125 material I’d be well over 110 amps. For 1/16” filler I might drop closer to 100 amps. If you are u...

Re: My first outside corner

The corner bead in the pic was with steel filler rod and at 70 amps, are you saying try it at 110amp? I wasn't clear from your first post...is the picture of 1/8" or 17 gauge? Sorry I kinda rambled now that I re-read it, The picture is of 1/8 mild steel. Using 3/32 tungsten and filler. I see h...

Re: My first outside corner

I think your welds look beautiful. Your starts and stops on the corners will improve as time goes by. Still look fine to me but I'm sure if you were being tested they would want nicer by a good bit. Something to keep in mind on your gas flow, when you're doing an outside corner you're going to want...

My first outside corner

I have been tig welding for a total of 2weeks now lol. I finally think I am comfortable running strait lines so I have now started doing out side corners. Was just look to see if I was headed in the right direction. I have mainly been practicing on 17 gauge metal and 1/8. The 1/8 is easier and the b...

First time Tig Welding Critique

Just reaching out to see if the vast knowledge on this forum could look at my welds and tell me if I am moving towards progress. Yesterday was my 2nd day using a tig torch, the first day was rough but I felt I started to get the hang of it this time. I want to learn so I can do various body panels o...
