Re: Help tacking and welding stainless thin tube to thick pl
The 60 amps won’t puddle the 1/8” plate. It will, you won't get an average size puddle, but it will puddle enough so you can fuse the thicker and the thinner part. You don't want penetration here, just a small puddle. I've been using this method when I started welding for the same configuration on ...

Re: Help tacking and welding stainless thin tube to thick pl
There are several ways to do this. Use scrap material to do the testing. Because stainless is not that thermally conductive you can do it on lower amps (around 60 amps), use smaller size filler, really tight arc that is focused on the thicker plate. Don't try to focus the arc even a bit on the thinn...

Re: THE carbide-tipped metal cutting blade thread
Interesting, thank you for the information. Let us know how the stainless cutting works. I will, but it's going to take a while. Now I'm renovating my grandfather's workshop to start business there, but the weather is very bad here, and the build stopped. Anyway, if it's going to work, I think that...

Re: Help with bead consistency
90% of the time I weld using 3/32 (2.4mm), and if you sharpen it right you can weld razor blades with it. Consistency on stainless depends on a lot of things. The first three most important things are: clean, clean, and clean. You need to have everything clean, base material, rods and nice grinded t...

Re: THE carbide-tipped metal cutting blade thread
Do you end up with a lower cost per cut with HSS, or improved cut quality in some way? The cut quality is flawless, the cutting time is very short, the blade produces around 800-1000 cuts before it needs to be resharpened. One blade can be resharpened many times. The downside is that it doesn't lik...

Re: Can anyone identify these welds on this Jet Engine
The weld on the second picture doesn't really look like a tig weld. There are several reasons for that. You can clearly see the edges of the pipes, the weld is next to them. The welded area looks concave instead of convex (concave welds are sometimes allowed on inside corner joints for non structura...

You'll soon realize how this forum really works :D I do now, no one is holding the leash... No need to sell entries to members at all. Vendors will provide the equipment gratis when appropriate. Their cut in it is that people on the forum talk about the contest (and the product...and the vendor) no...

Re: Tig brazing rotten cast
CJ7373- I was under the (incorrect?) impression that brazing was less tolerant to contamination, due to the lower heat input but I have never TIG brazed and don't know much about it. I thought that "preheating" along the joint with the TIG torch was allowing me to cook out impurities and ...

Re: Tig brazing rotten cast
Welding cast iron isn't an easy operation. You should use high percentage nickel rods, preheat, postheath, you can also weld cold (with special rods), and you should really understand the stress in the weld zone that is caused by welding cast iron. Often times hammering the weld is required. The oth...

Re: THE carbide-tipped metal cutting blade thread
No, same saw as you have, the dry cut saw from Evo. I don't know about cutting stainless or tool steel with a high speed steel blade, even with coolant. Those would have to go very very slow. I'm not sure 125 RPMs is slow enough. I've seen stainless and tool steel cut with HSS blades in a cold saw,...

Re: Help with new Welding Machine Setting
The trigger isn't anything special, and you can get used to it very easy, you just need to set the amps right on the point. General rule of thumb is 1amp per 0.001 inch. (40amps per millimeter). But that rule of thumb it's not always relevant. Most of all it depends on the material type, thickness o...

Re: Help with new Welding Machine Setting
Every welder prefers different pulse settings, it's more like personal preference. For example, I don't really like high frequency pulse. When I dab, I usually use 1 pulse per seconds, 30-40% on time, 15% background current (i dab during ON time) . When I do lay wire, i use 2 or 3 pulses per seccond...

Re: Storing ER70s and 4043 filler
Don't put them together, they hate each other and they'll start a fight. You'll find your rods broken into pieces  . Jokes aside, it's not recommended, but it's not end of the world. Use some material dedicated scotch brite, wipe them down with acetone using clean paper towel before welding, an...

Re: Grinding vs Filing Dust
I've always been curious how hazardous hand filing dust/shavings are. I'm not even sure the by products of filing are called dust or filings, but you get the idea. Obviously grinding dust, belt dust, wheel dust, etc is horrible for the lungs and that is why we wear respirators. Are there any risks ...

Re: THE carbide-tipped metal cutting blade thread
Mine is something like this, not the same but pretty close, and the coolant runs trough the guard of the blade and the blade itself. I'm wondering if the HSS blade will cut stainless. In theory it will, but I don't know for how long, because these HSS blades aren't cheap here. Any experiences? Scree...

Sorry to interrupt, but I am just curious what is the lowest RPM that these things will work. I have very powerful low speed saw that runs with coolant. I agree that it's nice in some ways to be part of a forum that is small enough to basically self-moderate, but it's also a bit of a shame that more isn't done with it. It could really grow into something amazing, and relatively quickly, if it was promoted more and given some code upgrades. But that...

Re: DIY and stuff like that...
IMO , while this is a great forum, it has such little traffic that it would be redundant to have a separate DIY section. It's not like there's hundreds/thousands of DIY projects being randomly posting in all corners of this site that it would necessitate some kind of organization. On the contrary, ...

I consider myself DIY guy, if I can build it, I'm not buying it (sometimes costs more ). But I'm also seeking for new ideas, and that's the reason I created this topic. I think it will be easier for a lot of people to find only DIY topics in one section, instead of scrolling/sliding

So techically this would be a chart that I think is more related to what is commonly known as "gas lens" set-up's. Yes sir, I think I've mentioned that before. This chart is specificity about gas lens setup, (cup sizes that are most commonly used). The standard collet body cups will creat...

pretty good TIG welding of those thin blades Thank you. Welding these things have special place in my heart. For a beginner, welding box cutter blades shows exactly what a decent weld needs. But I'm getting off topic here. I did a quick calculations and made a chart about the gas flow. The numbers ...
