Re: Is “KD D500N” rebar weldable?

I bought it to make a kindling cracker, used to break firewood down with a sledge hammer.

I did it today and it works great. Thanks for your comments. Got me off the fence, as I was thinking about waiting and stopping by our steel supplier tomorrow.

Is “KD D500N” rebar weldable?

After buying and chopping up some rebar for a project, I’ve learned that not all rebar lends itself to welding. The rebar I’ve got is 16mm and stamped with “KD D500N”.

Can anyone advise whether this is suitable to stick weld? And if so, am I better off with 2.6 or 3.2mm rods? Thanks in advance.

Re: Advice on welding a 7m span

Thanks so much for the messages. I wound up having to do the job before the first message came in. I resorted to Option C (single span) and cutting a bit out the vertical supports, to mirror the rounded edge of the profile of the horizontal sections, then dab welded each section. It's working great.

Thanks @homeboy, @Spartan and @Louie1961! That's really helpful. The magswitch looks really well designed.

Deciding right rating for earth clamps

I'm about to buy a magnetic earth clamp, as often I'm welding surfaces where a normal clamp just can't grab hold, or will damage the surface. My assumption is that I should get a clamp that matches, or is just above the amp rating of my machine, a Cigweld Weldskill 185. So, all other things being eq...

Another Aussie

Like @Ozland, I’m in Australia, and living rurally (South Coast of NSW), where it was noted that welding can be “kind of essential.”

I’m doing stick and MIG, after doing a TAFE course (equivalent to a community college).

Lots to learn yet, so the wisdom of this group is greatly appreciated!

Advice on welding a 7m span

G'day from New South Wales. First post! I'm a relatively new welder and was hoping to get some advice. I need to build a support for 90mm PVC pipe that will run to a rainwater tank. I've considered a few options to do this. The distance from the eaves to the water tank is 7.1 metres and cannot have ...
