TIG welding is demanding I would choose a better brand.
Even cheaper stick welders can weld simple stuff.

Re: ESAB Repair and Maintenance Welding Handbook

What a coincidence I was reading that yesterday. It is quite good. It answered some questions I had about austenitic manganese steel and other hard to weld metals. Those hardfacing rods are a mess with so many different types. I hate it when companies give their own names to rods. You cannot say wha...

Thanks for the info.
Coldman wrote:Never seen it myself but I was told a 6010/6011 weld at low temp would break if hit with a hammer particularly if layed down hand.
From what I've read 6010s are much stronger than 7014s at cold temperatures.
Of course, 7018s are far stronger than 6010s.

Re: Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?

Mild steel is not but hydrogen rich welds are. That's one instance you need low hydrogen rods, mig or tig processes. So mild steel does not have a problem under these cold temperatures but any kind of no low-hy welding may cause shattering problems? MIG and TIG are low-hy processes but it is rarely...

I'm surprised myself, especially with that bad title.

7018 is over matched for mild steel.
Except if you want that v-notch to weld something exposed to severe cold I guess.

Is mild steel shatter sensitive to these temperatures?

I guess companies and tutorials on the internet are super careful to avoid any trouble if someone gets hurt.

From what you know how much will ductility drop?
I guess it will still be more ductile than rutile rods like 7014?

Re: Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?

One of the true experts who has posted on most of the welding forums once did a writeup about welding with wet 7018 rods. He soaked old rods in a can overnight to get them completely saturated, then used them. He would pull one out of the can, put it in the stinger, stick the rod to the work and le...

Hello!
Jumping from MIG to TIG is a very big step.
Having some experience with stick before going after TIG helps a lot.

I have long desired to learn how to weld - although it is not my career, and likely will never be, I still want to learn. Welcome. I am not a pro either but I am addicted to plasma forever. You and other new members have some good welding machines. I better not reveal with what I weld with  Th...

Re: Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?

What the ???? I just saw the errors in the title .... I meant "Can 7018 rods that were exposed to moisture cause welding problems?" :D I’ve had7018 that was almost a full 50 lb can that got caught in a rain storm. Filled the can with water. Poured it out, threw out the hand full of rods th...

Welcome. You will. Stick welding is a great process. You get the most bang-for-the-amp with stick welding! Thanks, Oscar. I've seen a lot of your posts already and you posted in one I started. You seem to know quite a lot for a hobbyist welder. The technology the forum is based on is a bit old. It ...

Re: Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?

For non-critical work, my opinion is yes. I use plenty of those. I should get a rod oven though. The basic cheapies are $100-$200 Those are for 7018 storage only not rebaking. How are you going to use them? Open a new package use some and store the rest until the next welding? And the energy consum...

Re: Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?

I can help myself ... I jump from question to question  I started to read about metallurgy and I stumbled upon the 'carbon content equivalent' term. Then I read that mild steel thicker than 0.75" has added manganese which increases the carbon content equivalent. As a result, it can be hard...

Re: Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?

Thanks for the answers. Oscar, you write that with an exposed E7018 you cannot have the ductility it is known for if you ever weld 1" thick mild-steel? So that it will not crack from shrinkage? Which is not related to hydrogen cracking right? Or you are talking about high strength steels? Not t...

Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?

Hello. I have some E7018 rods that were left exposed in a drawer inside the house for a couple of months. Visually they look good no rust on the wire and the flux looks good. I want to weld 1/8" mild steel with them so I do not care about low hydrogen welds. But can the extra moisture worsen ar...
