Re: Alu Mig noob disaster

Does the machine have a remote switch. If it does and its switched to on, then the volts set at the wire feeder. If its off then volt are at machine, Its a good guess based on other machine I use, not familar with your model.

Re: Alu Mig noob disaster

One knob is volts and the other is wire speed. If you have a machine that allows for wirefeeder volt adjustment. It wil be something like a switch that says local/remote. In remote the wire feeder controls volts as well, saves trips to welder to adjust. Wire brushing helps too. I avoid mig ally as t...

Widely used? Where?

A disappointing post I have to say.

Re: Function of Iron Oxide in MMA Flux?

I have to ask, what do you think is the difference in the way they using the terms. One is iron powder the other is iron and oxygen, which also occurs when burning iron powder. I wonder if you didnt create question to just do an info dump. It is still widely used and to the best of my knowledge, Eng...

Re: Function of Iron Oxide in MMA Flux?

The iron powder not only melts in the heat of the arc to increase deposition rate but also enables the electrode to carry a higher welding current than a 'standard' electrode. The iron powder is electrically conducting, so allowing some of the welding current to pass through the coating. A quote fro...

Re: True Defininition - "Root pass"

Hi Rc, mate a 7018 is a low hyd stick. It is easier to get peno with a 6010 cause thats what those sticks are made for. If you can do a good job with 7018s all other sticks take way less practise. Your teacher is setting you up for success straight up. Thats great. Enjoy trade school, its a place wh...

Do ya best, sikaflex the rest! I was given that as actual advice when I first was an apprentice, it still makes me chuckle hard. I did think it was a joke till I had to cut out a heap of welds on China made structures that "didnt look right" much to my suprise they were 3 tacks covered by ...

If it is for code tests then 8" x 3" x 3/8" thick with bevel prep 30degree with your choice of landing. This is not economical for just learning to weld, but you mentioned haz affecting joins so I figured you were not just starting to learn to weld. Otherwise get beads on anything for...

Re: Spool Gun on Cast Aluminum?

Hi mate, I never spruik the use of araldite or metal glue but this is the realm in which these shine. Put some in hole get some wire and bend a little so you can use it to spread it around the hole on the inside, just a little to create a lip so it not just a plug, then put a little more in to fix h...

Yeah its like that. Its easy to get busy working skating coding etc. There is always some activity. I sure you are aware that aluminium bronze on run on ac. Due to ally content. Silicon bronze on dc and can run on ac aswell. Usually only albr on ally kinda jobs. Silbr on steels coppers etc. Gas lens...

Hi mate, trust me dont bother with stainless, the nuts on that thing are probable original. Just replace them use never seize and dont dukka dukka dukka the hell out of them with a rattle gun. Re: Help me Get my Oxy-Propane Cutting Torch Going

So oxy propane and oxy acet are similar, both are thermal cutting. They both heat steel to a glow and the you press lever and the centre hole is oxygen only, and it oxidizes the hot steel, in general kinda blows it away neatly. With both processes make sure that you light gas first. Turn gas knob on...

Re: How Much Metal to Leave on Tractor SSQA Mount?

Which hole the panel did you mean? It is generally a good idea to make it as 1 piece as you can, cutting the middle out of the panel can introduce stress points and would need welding, so extra work. And not much weight saving. Youtube one Looks like a backyard job but fair one. Ideally that top str...

7014s or ferrocraft 21 to be specific are my goto if I cant use low hyds. But if you must run 13s , good amps tight arc and find a good angle on vertdowns which I find is about 5 degrees ish up. Not welding a whole join in one can help with blow throughs. Like do one side of rhs and come back for th...

Re: auto darkening helmet

Not knowing what you have, my guess is to find a battery and change it, or if it has a solar panel then sit it outside for a little bit. All helmets have sensors regardless of brand, and when exposed to welding light it activates the darkening lens, these sensors may be dirty or faulty. You may need...

Re: Dissimilar Metal Thickness

Yeah there is usually, while getting peno, you favour the thicker material slightly so you can burn into it and not terribly undercut the thinner material. It would help to do some practise runs and cut then to make sure you got it. Grind all areas you intend to weld clean. Even if you do out of pos...

Re: 7016 being smothered by slag

Some different sticks need slightly different techniques, that is usually not enough drag angle, going too slow for stick or too low amps. Both the more amps and a bit more angle force the slag back a bit more or going a bit quicker keeps it ahead of it. Either way it would only be a small adjustmen...

Re: HELP! Angle iron frame bowed and unsquare

This is one of those things with welding that is useful and horrible, when you get used to predicting. You can, using a stong clamp put packers under the edges and pull it down with the clamp. Its important to note that the bend moment needs to be found. For instance a beam that is 6 foot long and l...
