Re: avoiding distortion in thin plate 3/16"

Thanks Weldmonger, I went and tried to make the plate even more flat, and I screwed up. I made the thing so dished, that I cut the offending 8" piece off, and I think I will be able to make the big piece flat by bolting it to my cabinet (thankfully made of steel tubing) I think after I get that...

avoiding distortion in thin plate 3/16"

I am making a cabinet with drawers and I am putting a 3/16" top on it. I've added a 8 inch piece (X30 in) to a 48 X 30 inch top. I have a stick, tig and mig welder (only .025 wire). I attached the 8 inch piece and tig tack welded it about every 6 inches on the front and back. I straightened it ...

How to get past a tricky part on 5G, sch 80 pipe?

I'm having a hard time getting my 1/8th rod to stick to 4" pipe in the 5G position. I certified in the 2G, but I guess gravity has better leverage (or something) which causes my properly bent 1/8" rod to fall out of the groove at the second pass. Everything is clean and shiny. I have 4&quo...

How toxic is tungston?

HI, I am just wondering how toxic tungsten is and if I should take more precautions while grinding my electrodes. Is tungsten considered a 'heavy metal' (like lead is)? I have my 'shop' indoors, and it's in my living quarters, so any dust will fall on the carpet and I vacuum it up. Just wondering-TIA!

Re: Practacing outside corner joints

Make sure that the stuff that you are cleaning the oils off with IS NOT CHLORINATED. UV light (Tig puts out a lot) will turn chlorinated solvents to phosgene, which is extremely poisonous. A lot of welders have died in closed areas when chlorinated solvents are present.

When will Jody's 2014 DVD's come out?

I have all of the DVD's, 2011, 2012, 2013. I wish he had more (but realize he's already got more out than most anybody else) I'm wondering about when Jody will have his 2014 DVD ready for sale?

clear (Pyrex?) TIG cups-opinions?

Hi, I'm a very beginning welder, who just got a Everlast TIG 210EXT (partially on Jody's reviews-Thanks!). I haven't started it yet (waiting on a argon bottle) but I would think that the clear pyrex cups would be helpful in seeing the weld puddle. They aren't entirely cheap (at least compared to the...

Hello from California!

Hi, I'm a beginning welder, I've just started taking a basic welding class at the local community college. I'm looking to make a career change, eventually. I've been checking out Jody's videos, they have been helpful in many ways. He even has given some reviews on welders that I am interested in (wh...
