Re: Quick Qs on tig brazing copper/brass

Thanks. Its not exactly an HVAC applications. Just making an adapter to use a HVAC vacuum gauge (sorry, _refuse_ to call it a micron gauge; and it ain't since i'll be using mbar ;) ) to work with a CNC laser, for a vacuum check and system calibration. I've had luck with a map torch and Stay-Silv in ...

Quick Qs on tig brazing copper/brass

Have a semi-urgent need to make a fitting/adapter. Not having an oxy torch, pondered tig brazing with silicon bronze (have the filler rods here somewhere) 1-So can I do this copper to copper? 2-Copper to brass? 3-Do I need any flux? Needs to be fairly clean, will argon purge. (no N2 or He here) And ...

wp9 and wp17 backcaps the same thread?

Ordered up a new wp17 and wp9 torch heads & handle for my stock Miller Diversion 165( love it thus far)).
Are the back caps the same thread (ie: interchangeable? (Once again reducing inventory and time)

TIA.

Re: Purchasing Tungsten

2% *what*?
What are you trying to weld? Or just 'everything'.

I agree, buy from Jody/support the site, as a beginner.

(Even considering Jody's bias, might also ponder 1.5%)

Any 'fits-all' is (a hopefully acceptably) compromise on all.

Standard/long cups on a stubby gas lens?

Is it OK, or bad, or frowned upon, to set a torch up with a stubby gas lens, then use the full gamete of cup lengths?
Just trying to limit parts and time. (Rarely weld anything critical, just tend to find myself in non conventional situations)
TIA.

Re: Welder's nose?

Metal is just cut up scrap HRS. .060 - .125. (I'm a service engineer for CNC lasers, and typically grab scrap laser cut material from customers) (and purchased .060 wall square mild tubing. Its not the plasma smell, nor grinding smell, nor like a laser cut smell. Welding in my 2 car garage with door...

Welder's nose?

Oddball question, issue.

I mainly do TIG welding (or at least attempts, just a hobbyist)

But after welding for a bit I get a smell stuck in my nose.
Not a horrible smell, but certainly not bacon.

Ideas?
Not sure if a fan is a good idea (don't want blow away the shield)

Re: Aluminum pre-heat HELP

Hi Guys, I have an infared thermometer and find them inaccurate on aluminium. You can adjust the settings but I have found that does not represent the true temp of the material. I pre-heat to a little over 100 degs C say 120 C. In the begining I used a 120 C heat crayon but now just use water. This...
