Re: I cant belive thats from a fabricator

I understand the dark red spots around the welds and even the heat effected areas, but why is there so much red showing on the pipe itself? That would almost indicate a porosity in the pipe itself would it not?

Re: I cant belive thats from a fabricator

Okay, so I searched You Tube and found several demonstrations of the process. I now see that what looks like white primer in the photo's is actually the developer spray. That sure seems like a lot of defects! Hard to believe that the dye was cleaned off at all before the developer was applied! I gue...

Re: I cant belive thats from a fabricator

WOW! Thanks for the explanation! Was the dye applied from the outside and only adheres where there is a defect? I guess you have to know what you are looking for. It seems like the stuff just pooled up in spots and dried there. It looks like the welder applied a primer or something in the welded are...

Sorry for my ignorance, but what exactly are we looking for with this dye penetrant testing? What are you guys seeing on these welds?
Thanks

Re: Lincoln Power Mig 140c or Lincoln ProMig 180

I think for the price difference, I would go with a 220 volt unit. You can never have enough power! It is interesting to see the differences posted here between the Big Box Store models and the LWS versions. I know that the 180c has an infinitely adjustable voltage dial versus the "tapped"...

Re: TIG Welding Aluminum with DC?

Thanks guys! Not the answer I was hoping for......but I'm sure you are right. I guess using an old AC buzzbox won't work either? Assuming i could rig up the torch and gas supply for the argon?

TIG Welding Aluminum with DC?

Is it possible? I realize AC is preferred and recommended, but if AC is not available, can you use DCEN? If so, would you still want a balled tungsten?
Our Lincoln V350 Pro machines do not have AC capability, but I would like to practice on aluminum plates.

Thanks

Re: Source for small qty of 5/8" stainless tube?

We purchase ours from a local supplier that is a Rep for Swagelok. In that respect, you can purchase a half length that would more than be enough for you. We use it for teaching orbital welding. Maybe locate a Swagelok Rep in your area?

I'll chime in with my praise as well! This site and the weekly tips are awesome!
I can't imagine how much time Jody puts into this, but it is all worth it in my opinion. The tips and info are delivered in such a way that they are so clear.
Thanks again Jody for all that you do!

Sandflea05, I'm glad to hear that your Son is considering a career in welding! The demand in this field is soon to be huge! Many Boomers will retire and we need people to fill those jobs. The best time to learn is while he is young. Steady hands, good eyes, and flexibility will serve him well. The r...

I was going to suggest "Harris" as the brand from the looks of the barrel. I don't even see check valves on the torch. There could be flashback arresters at the regulators though. There should be some markings on the torch barrel thought that would identify it as either Harris or Victor. T...

I can't speak for the 1 week MIG class other than that I recently completed their 6 week Stick course and 4 week basic pipe (stick) class and they were very well done. I will most likely go back in the spring for the MIG, TIG, and Alloys classes. I would give the Manager (Joe Kolasa) a call and rela...

Snowman, I am trying to set up a training shop as well and I am in the same boat as you! I can show you pictures (if I knew how to post em!) of the one at Lincoln Electric and the ones I have seen in other training centers. Usually a 30 Ton shop press will do the job. You may have to modify the set-...

Kermdawg, I am out of Local 787 which is the local for all of Ontario for Refrigeration & HVAC. I will be in Vegas in a couple of weeks for the 38th Convention! Yes, you still pay dues when you are out of work, but it can be at a reduced rate. Your description of why be union is pretty accurate....

Re: Union Fee/ Dues

Our Dues here in Canada for the UA is as follows:

Regular dues - $89.54 per month
Field dues - $12.00 per week

Total for a 4 week month is $137.54, 5 week months is $149.54 per month.

Note: This is based on Foreman rate. Regular Dues is equal to 2 hours pay per month. Everyone pays the Field Dues.

Re: Any tips for starting arc with AC only machine?

I just read a magazine article that explains the difference between 6010 and 6011 really well. The difference in the cellulose fluxes are that the 6010 cellulose is Sodium based and the 6011 cellulose is Potassium based. The 6011 flux helps to keep the arc "lit" while the AC current crosse...

Okay, I realize that this is now over a year after the original post, but thought I would throw my 2 cents at it! I am currently 1/2 way through my program here at Lincoln Electric Welding school. Originally, I signed on for a 6 week Basic Plate and Sheet Metal Program. As I got into that, I decided...

Re: Question about self darkening helmet

We purchased some of the less expensive Speedglas helmets for our students to use. The 3M Rep warned me that they may not be suitable for low amp TIG because the intensity of the arc is not enough to trigger the auto dark feature. The 9100 on the other hand works fine. I would say that this is more ...
