Re: 7018 vertical up
KG1257, Do you mean "whip"? or "weave"? You can definitely weave 7018's going vertical up. Whip and Pause is more likely associated with 6010 or 6011 fast freeze type electrodes and is an entirely different movement. When you weave, the tip of the electrode is moved back and fort...

Alexa,
I'm good with your description of the tig process, but I'm still looking for clarification on how it is the opposite of SMAW. Any thoughts on this matter?
Thanks

Re: Whip and pause with 6013s?
This whole discussion of polarity versus penetration has perplexed me for some time! With GTAW, DCEN is supposed to focus 70% of the heat at the work and 30% at the Electrode (Tungsten) for deep penetration. With SMAW, DCEN is supposed to focus 70% of the heat at the electrode and only 30% at the wo...

Re: Whip and pause with 6013s?
Hey Steve, Bare with me if I missed something here, but I'm a bit confused by a comment you made in this thread a while back! "6013 is an AC-capable rod, but if I were to use it DC, I'd go electrode negative for the extra penetration, since 6013 is not a deep-penetration rod in AC mode." I...

Was your 4G plate an open root test? Did it require 6010 for the root?

6010 rods on a Miller Maxstar 140?
We pulled the little Miller inverter out today and tried to burn 6010 electrodes 1/8". These things just won't maintain an arc! 7018's run fine.
Is it the open circuit voltage these units put out that limits them?

Re: 3 in 1 Torch Holders and Stand
Nice work!
I'm thinking the one on an angle is for the MIG gun, the vertical one is for the stinger, and the fork one is to hold the TIG torch?
We need a shot of all three hanging in there!

Very Nice! You are indeed a lucky man.
I'm curious as to how those little Thermal Arc machines perform. I was looking at one last year as well. Seems almost too good to be true, but if they really can do all three functions, it is a great deal!

Re: Measuring welder amperage
A "standard" multimeter is capable of reading DC amperage, but usually only in very low ranges. Possibly 10 amps at best. In order to do this, you would have to place the meter in series with one of your cables. Just the small size of these leads on the meter is enough to tell you that the...

Re: Hobart handler 120 dial-in?
Steve, will that method give you actual welding voltage, or just the "unloaded" weld voltage (sort of like open circuit)? I thought you would have to have someone measure the voltage at the terminals inside the machie while you actually welded with it? Maybe it is just the "constant v...

Re: Newbie with extension cord question
That 10/3 cord is pretty light for that current draw. I'm guessing that they didn't use the machine to it's full capacity and were therefore able to get away with it. 75 feet is a log way for an undersized cord. As far as you cutting it down to make a multi-purpose cord, no problem. It would be nice...

Thanks Steve,
I ended up picking up the "pickling paste" today. The stuff works awesome! It is almost instantaneous. The container says it is Nitric acid and Hydrofluoric acid. I now have more than I could ever use!

Thanks Guys!
I did find some "pickling paste" at our local welding supplier. It is quite pricey at $108.00 per half gallon though. Naval Jelly used to be common around here, but not so these days. I used to use it to kill rust on car bodies.
