Re: Need info on welding table purchase, "PLEASE."

That looks an awful lot like the table Jody has used in some of his videos. They sure are nice, but this is one cheap Canadian that will have to make due with my homemade one!

Re: My third and fourth pproject!

Some nice projects there Craig! Thanks for sharing them with us. Those are some good points Steve, especially regarding treating the air tank as an ASME vessel. I was going to point out that "anti-spatter" spray won't stop the spatter, it just prevents it from sticking to the nozzle and ti...

I really like the looks of the one in your pictures. It is made by Sellstrom and I've never seen one around here. I sent them an email today to see if there are any distributors in our area.
That extended piece at the bottom might come in handy. I have a long beard! LOL

I'm sure lots of folks could use some of that rain! We finally got a bit tonight, but it's been a good month since we had any to speak of. Everything looks like burnt toast!

Steve, Looks great! How are the aluminum steps attached to the steel stringers? What happens to this stuff after the show? Is it re-used, or cut up for scrap? Seems like your job would continuously be changing! You would never know what the next day or week would bring your way! And, that to me, wou...

Ya' know, I've work all up and down the eastern half of the U.S. I've worked in shops along the way. I've built powerplants, ethanol plants, biodeisel, "landfill gas to energy", cryogenic work, and all the piss-ant jobs you have to work on your way to these. I've been doing this for thirt...

Re: beginer question

The only difference between 7018 and 9018 is the tensile strength. 7018 is 70,000 pounds anad 9018 is 90,000 pounds. The make up and flux coating of the rod is the same and should run the same. I would think your trouble is coming from: 1) the AC only polarity of your welder 2) moisture in the flux ...

Re: DC polarity

mArc, One of the confusing things about electricity and electronics is that in automotive work, we have been conditioned to see RED as Positive, and BLACK as negative. When it comes to electronics, RED is often the negative, and BLACK is used for Positive. I have no idea why this is, but it makes th...

Craiglam, I agree with pretty much everything you have said. Inverters are the thing of the future. If you don't need more power than the 161S puts out, then go for it! I'm a bit confused by your statement about the 6011 rods though. You said they are good for penetration, and that is true, but most...

Re: Issues with "round" weld beads

I'm thinking you are on the right track with your ESO. The contact tip should be flush with the end of the nozzle for short circuit MIG. If you are already recessed 3/8" plus add the limiting effect of trying to get into a corner, and the total contact tip to work distance could be easily 3/4&q...

Re: ESAB MIGMASTER 280

Steve,
I know what you mean about it sounding like "Spray transfer", but I think it is pretty much impossible. I am only using a low voltage setting and with the 75/25, it should not be possible. It definitely is strange!

Re: ESAB MIGMASTER 280

One experience I've had with our look-alike Millermatic 250 machine is that at times, the welder will go quiet and there is no crackle. It is like a hissing sound and the weld bead will not be good. I found the other day, that increasing wire speed slightly seemed to correct it. It is not consistent...

One of the nice features I like about the Hobart is that the consumables are the same as for the Miller of the same class. You can get the Tips, Nozzles, and other consumables at your LWS or at TSC stores on a week-end. I just bought all my consumables in the Miller version from a LWS and think I sa...

x3 on The Hobart 210 MVP! LOL. I bought one as well after Jody did his video pitch! I somehow feel like this is akin to the "Rev. Jim Jones" scenario where Jim (Jody) suggests we drink the lemonade (Hobart welder) and we all follow like sheep! LOL Anyways, I'm glad he did his pitch and I e...

Re: Thermal Dynamics Equipment

When we were looking at getting a plasma cutter for our shop, our concern was that we don't have a very large compressor. I enquired about using compressed N2 and was told, it should be okay, but the capacity would be reduced a bit because of the lack of oxygen. Since then, I spoke to Hypertherm at ...

I have no first hand experience with their equipment, but they look good and the new models that do three processes seem like a great idea. I have read quite a bit about their plasma cutting units not doing too well though. I think for those, I would stick with HyperTherm.
