Re: Need alternative to Tig foot pedal...help!

I think you should write to some of the major welder manufacturers as it might be something they would like to investigate and the publicity around something like this certainly would not do them any harm.

Re: What is this weld?

If I'm not mistaken the flux technique is called vapor-flux. I did a heap of welding with it years ago making motorcycle accessories, clip-on handlebars, carriers, crash bars etc. We linished and polished all the steel tube components first, then used vapor-flux with Oxy-Acetylene and Bronze filler...

Looks like bronze to me. There is a guy in the UK who posts on Instagram who does some amazing work using a torch that puts the flux in the flame. Seems to be really popular over there for for custom motorcycles Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk You mean Oxy torch? How to do...And get the 'Stack o...

Re: Taking the test - part 2

I gave many, many test's to welders in preparation for boiler repair jobs down thru the years. I have seen funny things happen in the test booths as a result. Had I talked with some of you blokes a few years ago my welding experiences might have been easier. I passed the TIG pressure test 2 years a...

That's not odd, that's standard procedure, and you'll never have to worry about that ten-year retest. Buying the bottle was almost like buying an agreement with your supplier. They have no reason to check their records for a contract when they can sell you gas. Steve S
In that case, definite...

I bought my own E size cylinder here in Oz but I never checked about what happens when it reaches the end of its lifespan, 10 years I think. Also, my gauge shows Co2 at around 500 kPa.

Re: Trying to understand new procedure.

I'll probably get a geared 12v servo motor, with maybe 5rpm at the shaft and gear accordingly. Need up to 26mm per minute but next question is that of the return contact. Maybe a small copper arm, spring loaded to maintain contact while the work piece is turning. I think I have the purge attachment ...

Re: Trying to understand new procedure.

That said, the Kj/mm is an upper heat limit, or travel-speed quantity, as was mentioned by another. Just stick with the WPS amps, and move fast enough you don't make it black, and you should be fine. Steve S
Thanks, but I have to admit it's got me in a knot and I'm thinking now of making a m...

Yes, those blades on an angle grinder(or ankle grinder?) look diabolical but how about the twin blade saws with counter-rotating blades? I've never used one but would have to be a vast improvement over single blade running in one direction. In boat building I've used routers without any issues at al...

Re: Trying to understand new procedure.

There should be given the amperage range to follow. For example 70-90 A. That kj/mm is heat input and it's bit weird that it is given if amps are not. Voltage does affect to the heat input as well, but usually that is not given for hand welding due to change of your tungstens hight. 10 volts refers...

Trying to understand new procedure.

WPS for TIG states; Current and Polarity, dc, -ve to torch and I haven't seen that before. I'm doing stainless, so dc-.
It also lists Arc energy range to 2.5 kj/mm and Voltage range of 11-12V? Both of which I've never seen when talking TIG.

Re: Wrinkled surface of weld, carbon steel

Hi all,
After all the drama over the cause of my problem, I've come to the conclusion that it was the wire type. At home I was using ER70S-4 but I should have been using ER70S-2, "SuperSteel" which is triple deoxidised. Anyway after all that I finally passed the #7 certificate.
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Steve, Thank you and to others for the supporting comments. So, if Argon/Helium, do you have an ideas or experience of that if it's used on low carbon steel? Greater heat input yes. As for your experience with Tungsten electrodes, if metal dust ends up in a tool kit, which it inevitably will, the...
