Distortion ;-!?

My problem is welding 20x5mm flat bar on edge around perimeter of 600x600x5mm plate and started with a tack at the center, welding to ends using 10mm tacks 50mm apart with the plate clamped bent to counteract pull from the bar. Not working, even tried over bending...That then stayed over bent!? Is i...

Re: Help tigging 14ga 316L stainless

Hey, All good tips, Just a little correction on what Gnabgib wrote, Stainless doesn't conduct heat well at all, thats why it warps like a sob and you need less amps to weld it compared to steel. To aid heat dissipation, clamp to a big piece of copper, aluminium to draw the heat away. Wet rags can h...

Re: Help tigging 14ga 316L stainless

Lots of small tacks and in a non-sequential pattern or back stepping. Stainless conducts heat fast so difficult to keep flat without using the correct techniques. That bead looks too large.

Re: Wrinkled surface of weld, carbon steel

Here I go resuscitating an old post/subject. After seeing Jody's video today comparing ER70s-2 with ER70s-6.I realized that using ER70s-4's was most likely the problem in my case.

Re: Rectangular frame+added cross members

When I make something similar I tack both sides, clamp to a table if possible, then weld some nice small beads, staggered flipping back and forth from top to bottom. Did the side rails have a round edge? You'll be surprised how much they move when you weld that joint. All metal moves no matter how ...

Re: Rectangular frame+added cross members

I would have done the same thing, cut them and make them fit very snug to try and avoid any pulling. What size are the fillets? Pics? If the fillet is larger than the base metal by much, it will usually account for pulling. I was undecided about size of wire to use, in trying 1.6 I got some undercu...

Re: Rectangular frame+added cross members

I would add that steel doesn't shrink very much, more then likely you did a good job cutting the cross pieces so that there wouldn't be any gap, so even the slightest shrinkage caused them to fit tight[/quote] Yes, but cutting in tight was to avoid the 'pull-in'. I wanted them tight. The cross-piece...

Re: Rectangular frame+added cross members

It doesn't mean the cross pieces have contracted in length, it just means that the welds have pulled on the adjacent steel. It could have been as simple as not giving them enough tacks, you taking too long to run each stitch weld, long-arc'ing it and dumping in extra heat, or anything in between. I...

Rectangular frame+added cross members

Ok I made a rectangular frame with mitred corners from 35x35x(1.37in)1.6mm(0.06in) thickness steel. Overall size is 1800x800(5.9ftx2.6ft) and it has been sitting around waiting for me to finish up. Yesterday I put 5 pieces of 20x20x1.6mm across the short span and these were a jammed in fit but the l...

If you need to do welding in a room in your house then I would suggest that you take up different work. Thankfully you're not using stick. I have a dedicated workshop and no matter how careful I am the place has dust buildup everywhere.

I regularly use Kobe 52U 7016's and find them very good to use. Haven't used the RB26's though but wouldn't have any doubts about their qualities and why would you be concerned about a smoother weld surface, it's what I live for.

TAFE testing and certification is very good but regardless of how brilliant you were at that whoever you apply for a job with, will test you again. So, being certified will get your foot in the door.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's a 7018 3/32 rod and about 75-80 amps. When I started welding I stick welded and for about eight years I've mig welded so I'm trying to knock the dust off. Thanks again. Amperage for 3/32 probably ok. depending on material thickness? eg. for vertical up using 3.2mm o...

Honest opinion time. These are some uphill stick welds I did today. Trying to dial in my machine. I've been running to hot and I think I'm getting it close now. Other than not knowing the amperage. I see undercut on the edge and by the buildup in the middle that you need to spend more time on the e...

Re: What I welded today, stick section!

Gussets are a standard practice. You may have to bend your rod about half way from the stinger at odd angles to get in to some of those spots. Yes, maybe I'm using excuses and ok bending or using shortened rods might have been an answer but the weld on that bottom flange would have required a mirro...

I was called on to do welding on universal beams supporting a 1st floor on a new residential build. The beams, around 8 IIRC had holes cut through the web at places for services, plumbing and wiring. I have read and re-read the replies on here :D It seems I will be going for the 32mpa (I think that's right and it's probably overkill) slab as it isn't that much different in cost apparently.
