Re: root pass with 7016
7016 are electrodes with both types of polarity...why they are so neglected when it comes to root passes ??? it would be a nice thing if somebody take a video of that procedure... thanks in advance... I did the full penetration cert, overhead and horizontal, using Kobe 52U's 7016's 2.5mm for the ro...

Re: root pass with 7016
My favourite is the Kobe 52U's, 7016's I really find that they are so easy for me to use. Whereas...Why do I have so much trouble with 6013's? Hopeless!

Re: Backing straps and there purpose?
Pipe can have backing rings, and when splicing tubes (like on motorcycle frames and small airplanes) it's not uncommon to put a sleeve inside and widen the gap so all three can be welded together. Backing straps are common in structural work I'm told. Ceramic backing straps are common in structural...

Re: GOT ZAPPED!!!!!!
My teaching instructor would at times when trouble-shooting a Tig machine, run an arc across to his finger. Don't know how he did that?
Shocks? Keep a few dry gloves handy. I've been zapped a few times by the end of Tig wire against my shoulder, mostly when return clamp hasn't been fitted properly.

Ok, but I generally start with a square cut on the post and finished work is mounted on structural grout.Boomer63 wrote:The gap allows you to keep the post square!

Re: Posts to Bases?
If you are welding a tube to a post, I like to leave about a 1/16" gap where I make my first tack. From that point, I am able to move the post around to make sure I am square to the plate. The slight gap also allows penetration. Gary I was taught that a fillet weld from one side needs to be a ...

Re: Posts to Bases?
5mm wall thickness isn't even a 1/4" wall, so actually, forget beveling and just smoke a single pass in all the way around and be done with it.
Is it just me overthinking once again.

Re: Posts to Bases?
I'd put a slight bevel, not so much that it will require 2 passes to get your required filet leg size, but enough to sink some weld in. 1/8' at 115-135 depending machine, with a 1/8"/3.2mm rods. Have fun Ah, yes...Rods are 3.2 so fillet is around 7mm. Sorry for imposing the metric. Is that 9/32?

Re: Posts to Bases?
If it were my own project, yes, I'd put a bit of bevel, just for the added "connection zone". Hell, just for the practice. Your mileage may vary. Steve S Thanks Steve, some guesswork on my part about the penetration re. MIG v Stick. I have limited experience with MIG so assume when these ...

Posts to Bases?
Hello all, I'm doing some 100x100x5mm posts on 250x250x10mm bases and wondering if I should grind a slight bevel on the posts. Using 7016's on one run all round at 115 amps. All of these I've ever seen are usually MIGed on one run. This is for myself so no WPS.

If you're in the US then Lincoln or Miller. I have a Kemppi Mastertig, so slightly biased and when looking I was thinking of getting the Lincoln mainly for the single and 3 phase function alone but couldn't justify the additional $1000 odd here in Australia. The Kemppi also has a higher welding ampe...

Re: Carbon Steel
DCEN. But why 190 amps? I would be on 90max tho that won't be the cause of your problem. Respectfully, you are in error. 90 amps on 3/16" material is much too cold. With the exception of an open root, knife edge - 90 amps will work fine there. Ok. My last job was 4mm, but yes, welded from both...

Re: Carbon Steel
I have to agree with the question on the high value. But I thought it might definitely contribute to the problem. Try lowering the current and see if this changes your resultant problem with the electrode. Trev
Maybe the excessive amperage is negating some of the shielding benefits of the gas?

If you are wanting full penetration, then looking at your photo, that's not it. As others have said, 2 passes.

Yes Mike it's diabolical and what's worse is the amount of time spent on the set-up only to destroy it all in a few minutes of welding.weldin mike 27 wrote:Hey Jeff, I hold the dubious honour of welding the worst over head butt weld my Tafe teacher had ever seen. Don't be too hard on yourself.

After many years using a stick welder in building work etc. I decided to try ...
