That is some cool stuff. I hope to be doing big stuff like that brace. Glad your work is so aware of safety hazards.

Re: ESAB Smashweld 180 Thoughts?

I agree. If anything does go wrong I will get it repaired. It looks solid other than the dirt and grim. Looking forward to getting the parts it needs and a tank for it.

Re: ESAB Smashweld 180 Thoughts?

Ha ha ya the one up from it is a 200 and is a lot smaller newer design. About the same size as a lincoln box you would get at home depot. There is an authorised dealer here in town. I put a call in for prices for a new whip and liner will see what they can do. He told me they can send the old one ou...

Re: ESAB Smashweld 180 Thoughts?

I know I did the 200 version sells for over $1000. So yes I got a good deal. I need to get a new whip liner and a tank of gas. Need to wait a bit for that. When I have it I will get some pics. First it will need some elbow grease to get the dirt and filth off of it.

Re: ESAB Smashweld 180 Thoughts?

There is a plug. I bought it and its all happy in the shop. He said it have a new diode installed a couple years ago? He plugged it in and the feeder rollers worked good but the liner was out. So I couldn't run any wire through it. Seamed nice and quiet its actually smaller than I thought it would b...

Re: ESAB Smashweld 180 Thoughts?

I told him I would call to go over this afternoon. I am thinking I will go for it. Only thing that will prevent me buying it is if I plug it in and it won't hum. Then its not worth it.

Re: Battery?

It was the fact that the entire electrical system is hooked up to both the ground and positive a the battery. By taking the leads off the battery it will prevent the juice from being back fed into the electrical system. That is what I was told in the welding course I was in and other welders have to...

Re: ESAB Smashweld 180 Thoughts?

Thats kind of what Im thinking. Kind of an industrial model. The extra $50 would help pay for the new whip.

Re: ESAB Smashweld 180 Thoughts?

Ok so ESAB is viable here in Canada. I found their site and it does appear that I would be able to get parts and stuff for it. Would it be worth it for $250? Here is their page for it. http://www.esab.ca/ca/en/products_catalog.cfm?Product_ID=804 It has a spec tab. Please give me your thoughts on it ...

ESAB Smashweld 180 Thoughts?

I have a line on this welder. Guy is asking $250 CND for it. Its a 220 plug with about 13 amp required to run it. It needs a new whip for it. Does anyone have any info on these? I am going to do some research on it. Just not sure its going to be worth it in the long run if parts are not available fo...

Re: Gloves Per Week

2 pair a week hell 1 pair month. Are you handling the hot steel with them? No way you should go through 2 pairs a week dude. Unless they are cloth. I love the thin deer skin ones for tig. Can feel the filler rod through them

Ballistic Welding?

Can someone explain what that is? I assume it is a process to weld armour type plating? The company makes parts for Hitachi heavy machinery Komatsu and other heavy construction equipment companies.

Re: Battery?

Its not just the battery you can damage the wiring harness and the computer systems in a car if you don't undo the battery. It can pop resisters and diodes on a board. Chips can be blown and then your car is crap. Any body shop will undo the battery if they have to weld on the frame or the body pane...

Nice job. I really hope the weather breaks soon so I can practice my 6010 rod. I want to get ready to try some testing. Going to see if the local college will do the testing.

Re: Battery?

Ok I get that you are comfortable with welding on your truck. The danger of that positive feed going through into the trucks computer system is reduced greatly. You are not welding on the actual truck. Much like you say you unplug any batteries on what ever you are welding as a precaution so should ...

Re: Battery?

Are truck beds not isolated from the truck frame with grommets that the bed bolts go through? Perhaps there is not enough ground to travel through the frame.

Re: Glove or not

I put some peal and stick velcro on the bottom of my helmet lip. Then I stuck a flap of leather on there. It stopped me from getting burned in the triangle. Just used a piece from an old set of welding leathers I had. Thanks Dad.

Re: Chipping a hot weld?????

There may be some here that have no other choice than to use that rod. They may get whats thrown at them and thats it.

Chipping a weld when its hot is harder to do. So yes let it cool down first. Makes it a lot easier.

I think I ran 8/3 wire out there. So I am safe. I put the same plug on my big compressor. Running that on the same plug when I need it. Yee haw I am rocking in the shop now LOL! Just if it wasn't -20 out there LOL.

Re: Battery?

Yup its not worth taking the risk. Unhook it all the way and play it safe. Frying any kind of electronics in a vehicle is just lazy on the person doing it too. Not to mention what could it do if it decided to travel through the wiring harness? How much would that cost to repair? As much as the comp ...
