Re: Ugly Tungsten Tip

Sounds like your tungsten is too small, step up in diameter. On an air cooled torch your gonna find your tungsten really is a consumable item at 150-180 amps. I run a watercooled Wp20 and can run 140 amp for extended periods with a 3/32, but I'm also running 2% Zirconiated.

Re: Consistent quality butwelding this alu sheet

Are you finding this near the end of welding the container up? If so this could be a hot air problem, expanding gas (and it's filling up from your shielding gas) are trying to escape causing an updraught. Maybe try letting it cool then do a quick run before it heats.

Re: Gritty look to my welds (Alum)

Have you tried a smaller filler wire? As you add filler it acts as a cooling agent to the weld puddle. A smaller size filler wire will increase puddle temps a little and allow you to travel faster. And why 4043? I'd be using 5356 in 3/32. Gas quality can have this affect, make sure your torch lead i...

Re: What is the best color to use for welding aluminum?

Try getting your hands on Zirconiated, they have a white end. They were designed just for alloy welding, big in Aus over here but almost unheard of over there in the states. I have a decent machine with water cooler and can run as high as 145amps on a 2.4mm Zirc electrode without problems. Give'em a...

Re: Tigging with helium

I have been told by a few people that the helium creates a hotter arc resulting in a cleaner puddle. Thus shinier welds. I only consider this option due to the fact that since I have converted both tig and mig machines to 20 foot leads I have noticed a drop in weld apperance, in particular the tig. ...

Tigging with helium

Hi guys I'm after a little input, I've read all the benifits of using helium with tig welding. However a bottle of helium mix has always been about 4-5 time the price of a bottle of argon, and I have been too scared to price a straight bottle. However I've been having talks with the local gas distri...

Re: Welding Myths

Don't know for sure if it's a myth but have been told by several sources that it is. *welders need to drink 2xfull glasses of milk per day as it assists the body in purging out the crap we absorb whilst welding. In fact the Australian army still have this theory and all welders are entilted to doubl...

Re: Tungsten grinder

That's the go! I was going to buy a dedicated small bench grinder for sharpening tungstens as there was no way I was forking out the hundreds of dollars for the special grinders.
And I can do my knifes!

Alloy filler wire selection

Hi I currently have a question that no one seems to be able to answer for me. I make custom plate boats and do various modifications to other boats, I have always used E5356 wire with no real dramas. However it have been suggested to me to use E5183, due to the fact that it has a better corrosion re...

Re: Welding on an Old Boat

Hey mate Older ally boats can be a bit tricky due to the fact the they will have absorbed salt into the metal a little and it will be right in through the crack. You will need to access the inside of the crack as well. Clean both sides with tanker cleaner (acid) first, then I would wire brush the in...

Re: TIG welding woes

Well, I did manage to duck out chriss eve back to the workshop to have a crack at cleaning the system. If I didn't I would have stewed on it over the break. I put some tanker cleaner diluted in water through the system and let it cycle for about 20min, then drained it 95% and refilled it with water,...

Re: TIG welding woes

Thanks Steve. I'll confess right now that untill I purchased the water cooler and torch set up I had no idea of the in's and out's. There is no local welding instatute that I can go to and do a course. So yes I'm guilty of putting automotive coolant in it...............an maybe a bit of tap water. A...

TIG welding woes

Hey, howd'y everyone. New to the forum but not new to the site itself, don't quite know how I missed the fact that there is a forum for so long. Anyhoo My collective problem is this. I run 2 ac/dc TIG welders in my workshop. One is a MIG-O-MAG 220 and the other is a Fronius Magic Wave 220. Both have...
