Dude, some people run tap water thru their torch and it works fine....some people love to complicate things and others just get it done. I happen to be the latter.

I doubt wax will save your lens from a hot burning piece of molten metal. Back when it was easy to get glass lens covers, even those would start to get pitted from flying spatter.
