To me music in the shop is like someone yaking away when I am trying to focus on what I am doing.
I like to listen to the machine, welder, mill, lathe, or whatever I am working with.

It is being welded to 1/8" thick tubing. What is the problem welding it to the hinge edge trimmed to 1/8" thick

I suppose that if you left your tig hoses laying around on the floor while mig or stick welding that would be a problem. Why would they have to be on the floor? Why couldn't sparks hit a TIG hose looped around the hook on a machine that happens to be near where you're working? My shop is pretty big...

When all else fails try a different tank of argon. I have a small tank that I keep around just for testing.
Some suppliers don't purge them properly when refilling.

Try a different bottle of argon. I have a bottle of argon in my shop that I know is clean and have loaned it out to friends. Four times it turned out to be water contaminated argon.
