Re: Motorcycle radiator mounting tab weld question
Yeah, aluminum is a major heat sink. I like to hit it soft for a few seconds and let the cleaning action clean my initial start area and then stomp the pedal and get my puddle. Then back off to a manageable heat.
Stuff like you're doing I have my best luck spot blasting them real clean first.

It's this discussion that needs a time out. Anyone can build a lamp. They sell "UL approved lamp
components" damn near everywhere.

Oh give it a rest. Anyone can buy lamp parts and make a lamp. There even kits available in hobby and craft stores. There thousands of wood turners making them and selling them at flea markets. I just got a C of O on a house and did not have to have one lamp plugged in. JMHO but you are making yourse...

Look, my family and I have been dealing with the BOCA code book off and on for the last 35+ years. A residential building inspector's jurisdiction ends at the wall receptacle. Period. What lamp you choose to plug into it is none of his fucking business. Anyone tells you otherwise is full of shit. Th...

Back in the late 70's I took a part time job re-decking barges. They had these 3/8" 36" 7024 "Jet rods". You grabbed them from one end though. You learned to bend the tip in the vice so you could light them up, set down the stinger and let them burn off themselves! Once...

Jody, a piece of frayed draw cord and a shopvac will make short work of snaking your wire through those joints.
And no melting wires either!

We sprayed a lot in the shipyard 1G, 2G, 1F & 2F with .045" and 1/16" wire but thin stuff for us was like 1/2". On non hull with 80S wire we did a good bit of spray twin arc. 2F with a 50%-50% knife edge bevel your lead welder puts in 2" - 3" of root pass and then your l...

Re: How do you tig weld in a tight spot?
My inverter's manual says not to use pure tungsten. I use 2% Lanthanated sharpened to a point for about everything. The starts are real crisp with the pointed electrode. On old dirty aluminum requiring a bit more cleaning action I blunt the point a bit since the added cleaning action tends to burn t...

The more silver the easier they flow.

Remember, heat = distortion.

For many if it ain't red or blue, it just won't farking do!
That said, I've personally been beating the crap out of an Everlast Powertig 200DX for three years and it's only fail was I had to replace a $ 3.00 micro switch in the foot pedal.

Re: Welding ferrite?
There's also a ferrite iron. It's a crystalline structured pure iron that holds a stable field when current is applied to a coil
around it.
If it's iron ferrite I'd bet silver solder would be a good choice to bond pieces together.

I had the AC/DC version of the Stickmate. Although it was a great little stick welder, the amperage adjustment was a bit dodgy when it came to tig. The major brands all make simplistic "entry level" machines but, if price is a factor, there are some Asian built machines with great price po...
