Re: How to drive a welder crazy

Nope. No exaggeration Steve. Let me preface it that the guy was like a high school bully. First night on the job this fucktard tells me that he's going to eat my dinner and that I have to go without because he runs this crew and he'll make my life miserable if I don't do things his way. about three ...

Re: How to drive a screwed with huwelder crazy

I supervised welders on a lot of jobs and we all liked to pick on each other when the opportunity presented itself. I normally carried a laser pointer to be able to put the red dot on an area that need attention or to show someone where they need to go next. It can save you a lot of steps or misund...

Oh Jeeze! "If it ain't Red or Blue, it just won't fucking do"! Bigfoot, I have personally been beating the dog snot out of an Everlast Powertig 200DX for 3 years now. (dual voltage units weren't available yet) It still works flawlessly. I do some part time work for a local machine shop. (h...

Re: Mr Tig?

JMHO but the added $330 bones is a bit rich for the improvements.

I bought a 200DX a few years back straight from Everlast and it's been stellar.

Now I did add a WP-9 torch, some gas lenses and a flow meter in CFH for a lot
less but I had to do the shopping myself.

Re: Critical weld

I'd use a run off pad at both ends. use the run off pad on the overhead to light up on say 15mm from the joint
and run off the vertical by at least the same amount. When welded just cut off the excess with a cutting wheel and polish.

Re: Cast aluminum chain case tig repair..............

Yeah I've done quite a few bike motor cases and covers too. I found it easier when I really pre-clean them first. I use Thrift (sodium hydroxide), Dawn and water. Basically boil them for at least an hour or better. Then float off the grease and junk before taking the part out of the tank. Acetone an...

Re: Vertical up weave tips

Try turning down 5 amps at a time till you start sticking. Then bump back up till it just starts to run smooth. Too hot will make it lumpy and hard to manage with lots of undercut so find the machine's sweet spot. (Use some suitable scrap for this) I like to keep my rod angle pointing upwards 5 to 1...

Interesting idea, one could do this with an Arduino and a few extra parts.

Yet another use for a tig finger.

I can't show you what I'm making as it's a prototype design for an ethanol fuel distillation unit. (yes the guy has his federal permits) Anyway, about halfway through the test run the wires start to burn at the element due to excessive trapped heat. Increased the vent holes and still they start to s...

Jody, how about a follow up using one of them new-fangled inverters like a 200DX?

You know, Pointed electrodes, higher frequencies, maybe some AC pulse.
Might be interesting to see what effect the helium has on all them built in goodies? ;)

Re: A few tips for Overhead 7018

Back in the day we did a lot of overhead in the shipyard. 8018 and 11018 One thing we found that made life easier was to hang our leads from something so that we were only holding up the least amount of cable possible to get the job done. Them cables get heavy after a few hours and fatigue can set i...

McMaster-Carr sells a diamond wheel that will fit a 6" bench grinder for under $150 http://www.mcmaster.com/#diamond-grinding-wheels/=w983si Couple that with a bench grinder from some place like Harbor Freight and you'll have a solid sharpener and still have plenty of your hard earned money in ...

This may sound duh but remove everything you can to make life easier. A fire blanket or at least some fiberglass cloth from the auto parts store will keep things like your legs or "your fellers" from getting burnt. Also, if possible, sandblasting the repair area of the frame can be really ...

Re: Weaving a 3g on 3/4" all the way out. (Pics)

The problem with wide weaves is more about excessive heat input. Granted on say 1018 or other such "low carbon" steels it really isn't as much of a critical issue but, with other alloys you could be getting yourself in real trouble. I know back in my shipyard days, if you got caught weavin...

Use up your tig machine? Is it a delicate flower or something? I have an Everlast Powertig 200DX and the stick function works really well. Much nicer than both the Hobart ac/dc Stickmate and the Miller Thunderbolt that I had. (btw. I did a lot of scratch start tig with those machines too) If your ti...

Re: Stick Welding Rods

Flux coatings are proprietary to the manufacturer and can vary greatly from one another. That's why 7018's like the Lincoln Excalibur run smoother than some other 7018's. Fluxes also vary with the makeup of the filler wires themselves. Why? Because the manufacturer wants you the consumer to love the...
