Re: Has anyone tried the new tig welder from Harbor Freight?
I have the older unit. (no HF or pedal) I bought it for a job that I needed to drag a compact SMAW welder in a tight spot. Because of noise concerns I could not use an engine drive and long cables. Besides the extra cable would have cost more than this little unit. I ran 7018 3/32 and 1/8 all day fo...

Re: Welding thin aluminum boat holes
Just get a good ground as close as possible. You don't have to be right on top of it.
Just put a thick backing bar of copper or stainless steel up to the hull under the holes and weld
the holes up. The backer will keep the puddle from falling out but won't stick to the aluminum.

Re: First Projects, First Welding machine - suggestions plea
The heaviest weld I see ahead at the moment is 3/8" plate to 1/4" wall rectangle tube in a lap joint fashion. But here's the ticket - it's the lifting point on a steel dumpster that will be picked up by a hook truck taking all the weight. Thus I was thinking: • first pass 6011, • followin...

Looking good. Be conscious of your starts and stops. Try not to stack them on top of each other.
Plan ahead so that you can burn right over the starts/stops of the previous pass. I did a lot of x-ray
on the subs when I was doing the shipyard thing.

What tungsten are you using?
Inverter based machines do not like green/pure tungsten.

I'd be really surprised if the axle tubes aren't bent from a hit like that.
After all that work it may not track straight.

Re: Cast Aluminum Rim
Cast rims are thick and suck up a lot of heat. If you have access to another flow meter get a bottle of helium from your gas supplier and "Y" the two hoses together. Run 50-50 argon and helium and watch how fast you get a puddle now. Or, there's always JB Weld! :( :o  :? :mrg...

Jody, we always used a welding glove with the tip of the middle finger cut off to insulate the power block. That is brilliant, rake! Nah, not really. Gloves were free at the shipyard! That and we needed it to be fireproof. There was always someone carbon arc gouging and throwing molten slag on your...

Yep, it will but, the tip is hot all the time on those HF welders so get a gas nozzle from Harbor freightMinnesotaDave wrote:If that's a flux core only model (no shielding gas) it will weld as is.

The question of connecting work and electrode leads was mentioned in this video and I thought I might offer this tip. Re: scratch start tig with a miller thunderbolt
Wow Louie, I had a stickmate and scratch start was a breeze on that thing. Other than dialing it in that is! LOL We did a lot of scratch start at the shipyards back in the day. Only the guys "in the shop" got foot pedals. Up in the boats it was scratch only. Root and hot pass then right to...

Re: 2t setting coming in handy for roll cage torch switch
Back in the shipyard we did a lot of scratch start. Mostly just root and hot pass then stick with 8018 or 11018. My first home shop rig was a Miller HF-20 hooked to a 250 amp Lincoln Idealarc. We rigged a couple contactors, a 40va transformer and a torch switch to break the arc without having to sna...

You can't hide a bad weld with paint and you can't make a good weld look bad with paint either.
My daughter can weld better than that. IMHO that looks like Fido's Ass!

Re: Outrigger pads damaged
I'd do a simple break test. Clean up the edge of that damaged web just below the damage and weld a piece of 6061 flat bar to it with 4043. Then snap it off. If you pull the whole nugget off with the bar then it's probably an alloy that won't readily weld. If the nugget snaps in the middle leaving we...

Re: Anyone use ER80S-D2 to weld 4130 Chromoly with?
What's your wall thickness on the 4130?
You may need to normalize it after welding.
A buddy of mine did a lot of circle track roll cages out of 4130 and he swore by ER100S-1

Treat it like a good woman. Lower, slower and make little circles!
I prefer tight circles to dragging. It keeps my old ass from falling asleep under the hood!
I prefer 125 to 135 amps and keep a tight arc. When the slag just rolls off by itself,
you're in the pocket!
