One could drive a car in any city and come to the conclusion that. . . no, they don't. Even when theirs and other peoples lives are on the line. Good catch on your part though.Otto Nobedder wrote:Do people not pay attention?

Re: Footpedal....No sir!
Since I started with my TIG about 18 months back I have pretty much used the pedal and I would say become too reliant on it and not not setting good values on the machine. Even doing the karate kid thing at times and I know it is not practical to be doing this so I will be learning to TIG with a to...

Re: Cats paw copes/scarphs
Yes, it is anodized and that's how we get it delivered to us. I haven't seen anyone else that welds it quite like I do, really. There's probably 6 different ways that I use, dependent on the type of joint. I'll be more careful with these the closer I get to the toe. We don't remove the anodized. Tha...

Finally, if you have to cut a mate to this one, repeat the above process but draw around the whole bend so you can fit the second one in the exact same spot for reference, repeat the steps above, put your copes toe to toe. . . http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l309/tigmaster/IMG_1801_zpsafcfc109.jpg...

Cats paw copes/scarphs
Don't know if this is the appropriate space. Just some welding geek stuff I find interesting. I remember when I started fab work, these were the kinds of things I thought were intimidating. I call these "Cats paws", because that's the first thing that popped into my head when I first came ...

Nice. What does it have in it? No mustang here, but I have a 70 Bronco Sport with a 4 spd that's quicker than it probably ought to be. It's what actually got me to go to welding school.

Re: Music in the shop.
I didn't have to go through it today. The radio wasn't on. Made a big difference of how the day went. I grew up around country music. Liked a lot of it and still do occasionally. This new crop is seemingly nothing more than some re-badged chippendale dancers that can hold half a note. My kids don't ...

Re: Footpedal....No sir!
No foot pedal here either. When I started where I work now, they had one and the guy looked like the karate kid with one foot in the air trying to weld overhead while standing. I brought the switch in from my machine at home for the machine I was going to be using. 6 months goes by and I am pumping ...

Re: My introduction and a question
BTW, Jeff, the topic's poster is also Jeff. It's specifically the "when I wake up" that concerns me. Yes, that is when my joints are stiffest, and I have to work them out, but he describes pain, and in his hands, specifically. That's what concerns me, and why I think a doctor should be co...

Re: My introduction and a question
I just turned 51. My shoulders and knees aren't what they used to be either. I am sure I have arthritis. I did 20 years as a drywall hanger. It's all coming down the pike at me now. But still. . .I have to be careful not to get too torquey with the equipment. I have to make myself relax or it just i...

Re: My introduction and a question
Welcome to the forum. Have you checked your grip on the equipment? When I was in school, the instructor used to check to see if we were clenching down on the stinger/torch etc. You should have a semi relaxed grasp on it. Just enough to control it. You don't want to be tight on it all day. This becom...

Re: Music in the shop.
I suffered thru "modern" country music today. WTH happened to country music??? If I hear one more Kenney Chesney, Brad Paisley, Tracy Byrd nasal country song, I will drill my ear drums out with a 1/2" bit till it comes clear out the other side. I was having visual fantasies of creatin...

Re: first time on aluminum today
Are you able to see the tungsten and puddle as you weld? These joints are where the tig finger really shines. I weld tee's (inside corners) drawing toward me in forward travel so that I get a perfect view of the works all the way to the end. Maybe take a photo of how you are holding the torch into t...

I went into the shop one day and saw that the cord was wrapped around the drill on the notcher about 6 times. I knew what had happened. I had warned and warned that he had better hold onto the drill tight enough to stop it when using it. His arm was black and blue like he had gotten in a fight with ...

That's awesome that you have orders for things that are actually fun to build. Those notches are actually pretty nice that you have there. I saw what looked to be a streetable version of a big boy's mini bike today. That would be a fun way to get around. One thing about the pro tools notcher. The be...

Re: my next Project
I made one for our drill press. I used an annular cutter instead of a hole saw. I made the frame go all the way across the table with the V on that and it is held with 4 r11's. I used a pipe above it the size of the broach to center it with reliefs cut out at the business end so the swarf can clear....

Re: Your own business?
Thanks for the compliment Steve, and thank you for the well thought out post, Billbong. I am a welder 2nd to fabricating, but it seems that most people expect a welding shop to do it all, at least in a non union state. Not having the actual welding skills was always the limiting factor in my case, w...

Very nice indeed. You have me wanting to build mini bikes! What a great project with the bender. Our pro tool notcher doesn't use the drill bit with the hole saw. Is there a reason why you need it with your setup?

Re: sand blast before tig?
I have nothing against (carefully) sand-blasting a repair area, since that is not the end of my prep. There is still grinding of bevels, wire wheel or brush, and sometimes an acetone or laquer thinner wipe or two if the metal has been exposed to oils. That said, for a critical weld that sees pressu...
