Re: sand blast before tig?

What is the metal thickness and amperage you are using for the example in the photo? It's sched 40 (.113 wall roughly or approx 1/8") manually pulsed at 250 amps at approx 1 pulse per second and one pulse per puddle. I have a momentary switch mounted on the torch handle. The other post that me...

Re: sand blast before tig?

What kind of machine are you using? I weld a lot of anodized. I use balanced welding on AC, pulsed at high amperage. It will float the anodized to the surface of the weld. I use 5356 rod and straight argon. Here is a normal weld on anodized. No prep with the coating whatsoever. The anodized actually...

Every time someone has brought me something like that, it ends up being pot metal. Strike a light arc on a hidden area. Cool car.

Re: Aluminum pipe and tube miters

Steve, that still happens to me at times. Usually it's while doing an overhead at arms length in a new boat. In those situations, I really have to concentrate on every puddle. It gets intense at times. Thank you, AJ. I haven't welded as much anodized this year like usual. Somehow, the economy direct...

Re: Aluminum pipe and tube miters

The tack is the giveaway. You can kind of see how the land I have on the outside will end up at about the same size as the tack. This was a rush job, welded as it stands in the photo. The welds could have been neater but this came in on a Thursday. Monday, I have a boat coming in that will only be t...

I can certainly understand that and I agree. I thought of doing the same to mine. The only upside to having multiple topics really is, the titles may cover more search terms in the archives when using the search feature. I'm not that up on using forums so that point may be moot. LOL. . .I can't wait...

Re: I PASSED!!!!! old dog new trix my lilly white____ bleep

Congratulations. No where to look but up now. :) Just about everyone I know that went through it, ended up glad that they did. Not to mention the cool new work shoes/boots and tools added to the wardrobe. I went through 18 months of electronics school before welding. I wasn't nearly as thrilled with...

I personally don't mind if you hijack one of my posts with an example. There's room for even the slightest relevancy.
Great work on these tankers.

Re: Aluminum pipe and tube miters

While I am at it, here is a semi-flush butt weld on sched 40 aluminum. It has a "hot dog" backer tube. Basically a smaller diameter tube with a section cut out, squeezed to fit the ID. It is gapped between 3/16- 1/4" to easily accommodate a submerged, 1/8th balled pure tungsten. These...

Aluminum pipe and tube miters

I always see these done really ugly. 99% of the time, it is from taking the prep for granted. Many people want to leave the crisp miter as cut and burn the point in. More often than not, this ends up looking like pidgie poop on the outside, and wider and flat in the crotch. I have better luck preppi...

I am waiting to get the make and model ill probly start this project in a couple weeks, going to Texas for a fishing trip soon, ill post some pics. Think you can walk me through the process? I will if I can from here. Most important is to keep it straight. If you see it starting to "free Willy...

Re: Bit of tricky cast

I use a milk wheel ( white grinding wheel for nonferrous metals) on the 5" angle grinder and then finish with the DA and fresh 80 grit. Some skegs have a specific foil shape. It can be nearly flat on one side and noticeably more convex on the opposite. This is true with some of the more high pe...

If I find the name of the outfit that sells them. they would likely list the specific profiles. I think it's called T. H. marine or T-H marine.

Re: Ready to Buy - Which Tig Would You Recommend?

To this day, I still give credit to the guys who helped me along. I remember when I first broke into the industry. Jeff, here's the topic with the lathe: http://forum.weldingtipsandtricks.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1367 Mostly on page 2 Ok. I had misunderstood that one as well. I remember thinking he had to fix the one damaged rod, not keep from doing it on more of them at the time. Still good stuff, in spite ...

Re: Parts Reproduction.

Apparently I am roughly at the same point as you, Steve. I'd be happy as a hands on (eyes off) foreman of sorts. There is a lot of waste where I work, mostly in wasted space, but the environment is casual otherwise. I can pretty much come and go as I please for the most part. I decide the equipment ...

If you notice, I don't have the frosting on my welds. I use the arc stream shape to project the weld path and it's borders. In simpler terms, I lay the torch down and use the undercutting part of the arc stream to define it. lol. If you imagine the shape of a typical arc stream on AC, you can kind o...
