Re: I'm a new kid around town.
Welditwill. There are probably strong and weak schools out there. Some may have traditional class hours while others are open in a way to allow someone who is working to fit in. It would probably be a good idea to get feedback from welders that had attended the schools. They will give their pros and...

Do you have a couple photos? One of the over all joint (drum plate-to-square stock-to-half inch plate) and one blow up shot of the cracking?
Is the cracking consistently along the fillet welds or only in the locations that corresponded to the blockages?
Tanks.

Welder. As the months pass, you will probably have a chuckle looking back at the first weld. As with all processes, the restarts, tie-ing in to the end of the last bead, are important to develop the techniques. Tanks for sharing the photo. Used homemade guide rings about the pipe to rest the torch and the cut is uniform and minimizes grinding.

Nils. Charge per hour. To reduce the hours, the client should have the areas to be welded cleaned from paint, the components clamped or fixed in position, and ready to weld. Also providing cover in case the weather turns for the worse. Probably a good chat on the phone to understand if he knows what...

Nils. There are a lot of procedures out there, but I never found one that is applicable for the trailer park setting. Thank you all for the excellent replies. I knew that repairing cast iron can be a tough job, but wow, now I really know how much care you have to take. Noddybrian had some interesting additions concerning the stick welding. It is correct about the cost of nickel rods. The 99% nickel rods are considerably more expensive than the half&half Ni/Fe rods. The advantage of rods is that you can buy only a few that are necessary to do the job. Probably ...

I've done miles of low hydrogen open root. Mostly 8018 and 11018 but 7018 also works about the same. Vertical is always up. Run it just hot enough that it doesn't stick. Hold the toes and fly across the middle. Once the root is in turn up 5 to 10 amps and run a "hot" pass. You should be a...

Welcome aboard.
No help on the question ... but others might have some input.
Lots of jobs do unannounced chemical testing though.
The good old days of half a beer or a couple drags before welding up the qualification joint are out of question anymore.
Enjoy the boilermakers.
