Re: .050 aluminum

If I was attempting this, my gut would say to start tacking in the middle of the long side of the bar and work my way to the ends. I'd probably do 5 or 7 tacks per long side and one in the middle of the short side. And I'd probably put a heavy weight on top of the bar.

They may not stock it, but any LWS can hop on the phone with Hobart and order it.

Re: Beam frame motorcycle welding practise

Very nice! Just looks a bit cold to me, but that's already been mentioned. Just keep going. Cut, clean prep, and tack up a dozen or so joints, and then weld them out. Repition is what helps me the most. And that goes for all of the steps. Doing one joint start to finish and then starting a new one d...

Yes, that torch uses 9/20 series consumables. Or 2 series CK parts.

Re: Tight tig welding situation, need some advice

I would use aluminum foil and make a purge dam around the whole area. You could just wrap right around the collectors. Kick the pedal a few times and let the post flow flood the area. Give it a go. Don't be too tempted to crank the gas at the torch when you are actually welding though. If that doesn...

Re: How do you tig weld in a tight spot?

I wonder if the shielding issues stem from the high He mix. Since He is less dense than air, it won't blanket an area the way Ar will. But I realize you probably need the He on that heavy casting. A challenging situation for sure.

Re: trouble welding tubing

I think you're doing great! I'll echo clean to bright shiny metal, get a tig finger to prop comfortably on the tube, bump up your heat to get a more fluid puddle going, and practice practice practice. I would add that you are over-filling the joint, but worrying about that comes later. For now, focu...

Re: What do the 'Know it All' guys say to you?

"You waste so much time with the amount of cleaning you do."

"You don't need to clean aluminum."

"You don't need to waste time clipping the ends of your filler."

Those are just a few of the things I hear regularly.

If I were looking at the 255ext, I would make an offer of $2300 for the machine with the SSC pedal and CK17 torch upgrades. The HTP Invertig 221 comes stock with those top end accessories and the backing of an excellent service company. Even at $2300, I'd still struggle choosing the 255ext over the ...

Nah, through Maine-Oxy, where I get my gas. I haven't found any online supplier carrying 4943. Most any LWS can order from hobart and get the material. It's whether or not they feel like actually doing it for you is the question.
