Help with fitment (45 degree cuts)

I have a small problem with making cutting 45 degree cuts in just about anything, but especially in Angle. I am using a metal band saw (swinging), and I cannot get this thing to cut a decent consistent 45 no matter how hard I try. In the past I had always used the saw to make my cuts, then use the g...

Re: When things finally come together practice can start

Re: When things finally come together practice can start

I turn 45 in November, and grew up working farms during summer and school breaks. Never wore sunblock and rarely wore shirts. I look back at all the accidents I had and wonder how I managed not to loose my life or limbs. I still don't like sunblock, and just live with the sun burns, but I had read s...

Re: When things finally come together practice can start

The structure portion will be steel. I don't have a brake thats big enough to make the whole thing from a single piece. I have another quick question too. Other than the big leather welding jackets, is there something that can be worn to prevent the welding "sunburn?" I spent 5 or 6 hours ...

Re: When things finally come together practice can start

I actually am using a pad to prop up my torch hand. The problem is that I am Right handed, and my left/right coordination is horrible. I have to make a conscious thought process of slide, lift, dab, slide.. repeat... Im still working on learning to coordinate keeping the torch on the joint while dab...

When things finally come together practice can start

Finally things are starting to come together in my head and now maybe I can start practicing to get better. What I mean by this is that I learned a little more about setup, and finally have the welder doing the work rather than me. I spent 2-3 hours over the previous 2 weeks welding 2 pieces of 6ft ...

Re: Please help me learn to weld 20ga Stainless

Last night I stopped to get Argon, and I picked up some 1/16" Thoriated, and the collets to use it. I also picked up a diffuser, but I may have gotten the wrong one for my torch because I cannot figure out how it's supposed to attach. I only got a few minutes at the bench, and I saw the On/Off ...

Re: Please help me learn to weld 20ga Stainless

The tungstens sharpness is not representative of how I normally start with. I dipped it into the pool a couple times before setting it up and taking this pic. Ive been cleaning/sharpening the tungsten back about 1/4th inch. Most impotantly keep in mind that I have been working steel with what your s...

Re: Please help me learn to weld 20ga Stainless

Here are a couple of pictures of the face. The petal plugs into the same plug as the wire coming off of the torch. The sheet sizes Im working with are a little to large to man handle to my belt sander, but Ill look for something I can use by hand. The way that Inhave been preping the metal should be...

Newbie question about torches and supplies

Would someone either send me a link, or help me learn about torch and supply choices, and when to use what. I'm comfortable in filler choices, and I am OK with when to choose throriated/pure tungsten. What I am not comfortable with is when to use the different cones, or different thickness' of Tungs...

Re: Please help me learn to weld 20ga Stainless

To do that as a fusion (come to think of it, this is probably the best way to do it even with a gap to fill), I'd turn it upside-down , start at the top where the joint's closed, and progress downhill, filler at the ready. This does work best when one edge laps the other; If they're corner-to-corne...

Re: Stainless drives me crazy!!!pics included

Check to make sure you have gas flow out of the torch.... Last weekend I was practicing on some mild steel, and couldnt get a clean weld no matter what. After an hour of frustration I went to increase gas flow. I stepped on my petal to get gas flowing so I could adjust it visually, and I got a short...

Re: Another newbie what am i doing wrong question

I doubt there would be too many compliments on my welds so far... Unless "WOW that really holds" counts. More serious, I tend to be reasonable when I judge my own work. I've spent most of my adult life with the philosophy that I should never stop learning new skills. i've never been afraid...

Re: Please help me learn to weld 20ga Stainless

Tamjeff; My first choice is to fuse metal, I actually tried to fuse the first time around, and it didn't go so well. Now for what this is used for, I am building an Ataud. It's basically an oven. The inside is a stainless box with the top open, a steel pan fits in the top, and Mesquite, charcoal, or...

i have 1.6mm, 2.4mm and 3.2mm. I only have the collets that come with the welder, but I don't know off the top of my head which ones I have. I know that none of them worked with the new tungsten I have.

Re: Another newbie what am i doing wrong question

I can't say my welds look great, but at least I am confident that they will hold for their intended purpose. I had previous experience in learning welding, so my expectations aren't too high. I know that learning the basics and practicing them is the biggest key.

i was about to ask this exact question. I was just doing some practice, and my tungsten is about 2" I have new packages, but I found out that what I have is metric, and I don't have collets for what I have. I don't mean to hijack this thread, but it would be helpful to me, and I assume other ne...

Please help me learn to weld 20ga Stainless

Ok, i have a couple three weeks before I need to weld stainless, but my first few attempts were epic fails (probably my worst ever first attempts) My upcoming stainless project is basically a box with no top. The welds I make will mostly not not be visible, and the box is 37"x28"x30" ...

Re: Another newbie what am i doing wrong question

I do need the practice with Mig too, but right now I need as much Tig practice as possible. This project involves mild steel, stainless and aluminum. I have to build two if these with the first being for my fiance and to be used at home. This first one I am using all mild steel for most of it, but I...

That picture is exactly it. After todays experiments in the garage, It may take me a bit more time that planned. I made several attempts at welding some 20ga stainless, and it didnt go so well. Re: Another newbie what am i doing wrong question

I agree that calling it a coffin is a bit morbid. Even more so considering it's size... I grew up in Iowa, and the first time I had Cabrito I was a bit reluctant, especially after learning it was baby goat. But I have to say it definately now a favorite. Anyway, my plans are to build top down. The t...

Re: Another newbie what am i doing wrong question

I agree that Mig would be a better choice. I could even use Oxy as I am most comfortable with it over Mig. The absolute ONLY reason I am using Tig is to help develop the muscle memory for holding the torch, and to help me to learn to see how the Tig pool develops and how to manipulate it. Sometime i...

Re: Multipurpose Cut off saw (TCT Blade)

I use pretty much that exact saw. Right out of the box it was a few thousandths off from being square, After an hour or so of adjusting/cutting/measuring and the repeating I got it to about 5/1000 on 90 degree cuts, and around 12-15/1000 on 45 degrees. I don't do too many other angle cuts. One thing...

Re: Quick Assembly Bench Question

I definitely understand the risk of fires starting from a tiny ember. And I really wish I had the option of 2 work benches, but space is pretty tight as things sit right now. The best option I have is something that either folds up, or that is just a work surface that I lay onto a bench. As for the ...

Re: Quick Assembly Bench Question

Think of a way to space the weld top maybe a half inch or so up off the wood top. To do that I would need to be able to bend the Stainless to wrap around the edges of the bench so that it would be rigid enough to remain flat instead of sagging. I don't have a metal break that is long enough to work...
