Quick Assembly Bench Question

I have a quick question. My Garage is a little tight for space, and I don't have a welding table. I was thinking I could build a welding table top, and pull it out and put it on my wood bench top when needed. While trying to put the above top together, I am trying to work on my wood bench, but prett...

Re: any burn prevention suggestions?

Honestly I am not so sure there are too many ways to avoid getting burns when welding, especially if its just a hobby for you. I'm sure the pros that weld all the time went through a period where they got burned frequently before they learned not to touch unprotected metal. I know you mentioned you ...

Re: Another newbie what am i doing wrong question

I actually like the idea of flattening the rods, hadn't thought about that because I have something like 60 of the things I need to weld to this thing, but if it works I'll do what it takes. I will try to stand it on end tonight. It's going to be a little tricky to do for me because I don't have muc...

Re: Good Shop Tips

For those tiny slivers use a piece of tape. Any tape really, but electrical and duct tape have been the best.

Put it over the sliver, rud onto skin, wait a minute or two and rip the tape off in the opposite direction of the paid....

Re: Another newbie what am i doing wrong question

I tried several times to focus the arc on the angle but I kept getting the same results.

Another problem I had was getting torch, rod, angle and filler to come together with me in a comfortable position too.

Re: Something to share about Oxy/Ace "Welding"

I learned to weld oxy on a farm doing repairs. What my uncle did was hand me a couple rebars or TPosts and tell me to cut them to 6 inch pieces. Then he would have me weld them back together. A couple of weekends doing this and I was finally able to do simple stuff. I have done a couple angle frames...

Another newbie what am i doing wrong question

I am trying to tig this rod to the engle iron frame. The rod comes from Home Depot and tag said steel. I grounded at the opposite corner of the frame. I have tried several angles, increasing/decreasing gas flow and amps. No matter what I do, the end of the rod will turn cherry red/molten, but the an...

Re: Heat sink for stainless pipe

Why cant you get a 1 or 2 inch wide piece of copper thats long enough to wrap around the pipe a few times.
If you wrap it tight enough it should function as a single piece?

I don't know a lot about welding, so I wouldn't bank on my idea, but might not hurt to test it.

Re: My first TIG welds, what did I do wrong?

Thank you Steve... Im going to get my bench grinder mounted solid so that I can use the wire brush wheel to help me clean the metal, Ive been moving stuff around and its gotten pretty much burried. I have limited range of motion in my right wrist with rotation, and getting the torch at a comfortable...

Re: My first TIG welds, what did I do wrong?

If the end of my welds are showing little or no gas, it may be that I pulled the torch away which is something Ive been fighting with Flux/Mig as well. I cannot seem to stop myself from lifting the torch from the work as I let off the power. I'm going to need far more practice on this. It might also...

Re: Tig Welder Advice for Hobby Welder

Well I managed to luck out. I was talking to an old friend about wanting a welder, and he had a Lotus 200a ac/dc sitting in his garage, he bought it, then got hurt so he hadnt even unpacked it. He sold it to me pretty cheap. I figure if it doesnt last, I wont be out too much. Started playing with it...

My first TIG welds, what did I do wrong?

Attached are pictures of my first welds with a new welder. Mild steel, 100% argon. 1st weld was the angle iron butted together. The welds were strong enough to take a hit from a 3lbs sledge. I know the metal wasnt clean enough, and I also didn't have the amps high enough, and Im thinking I may also ...

Tig Welder Advice for Hobby Welder

I need some advice before I make a costly mistake. I have been asked to make an Atoud by in In-Law, and he has asked me to make the frame as light as possible. He has also asked that I use Stainless Steel for inside liner and for food surfaces. So this means I get to do/learn two new techniques, and...

Something to share about Oxy/Ace "Welding"

I have an interesting experience to share. Maybe this is common, or maybe I am some freak of nature, but I thought I would share anyway. I was originally taught to "weld" with Oxy/Ace when I was 13 or 14 yrs old by a family member (I'm 44 now). I have used Oxy/Ace many many times since lea...

Ive been a member of EAA for more than 10 yrs now. This is actually my 2nd build, and third that I will finish. This is the first welded fuselage that ive done. Re: What am I not understanding (flux core)

I just reread this, and it was the wire spool wing nut being too tight. 3/8 rebar, is had amps set to mad (D), and I started with wire speed set at 2, but I couldn't keep a steady arc, I kept increasing the wire speed until i could hold a steady arc... I ended up with 4.5 to 5 for wire speed. This g...

Re: What am I not understanding (flux core)

I figured this one out... i had tightened the wingnut on the wire spool too tight. The rest was/is just newbe error. Ive been so frustrated by this that Ive almost tossed this little welder in the trash, but Im not one to give up. So here is how my thought process worked. Yesterday i was watching on...

What am I not understanding (flux core)

I need some help interpreting/understanding what I am doing wrong. I am trying to learn to wire feed weld (Flux Core) with a cheap Lincoln HD100 machine. I've read/watched a bunch of information, but either I am misreading or misunderstanding what I am reading... I am using mild steel (square and an...
