Re: NOOB lookin for critique

You are ambitious! Not everyone jumps right into a 6G. As far as the tricks to it its better to watch videos than try to explain.

Re: Millermatic 135 Problem

What wire are you running? I ask because if you switched polarity for flux core, did you accidently bolt the terminals back down so they are touching?

Re: NOOB lookin for critique

Mike,
I think you are doing fine. Most noobs don't have welds that look like that! Is picture 016 a vertical up? If so, WOW, that is nice for a couple weeks practice!
The only critique I will give you is practice, practice, practice.

Re: Mild Steel housing welded with SS rod??

Thank you for the kind words! So is the consensus that I should have used a more appropriate filler vs what we have laying around? And that this will stay together for me? What if, on my second housing (already tacked, as well as a few full welds with 316L) I used e70s6(2?) on the rest. Is it bette...

Re: Sanitary or Food Process Stainless Pipe Cutting Saws...

Mongol, I have not personally used it but watched others and actually got some drops cut from a cutter like this one. It seems to fit up rather well. I may not do as good a job as these cutting saws. If there was any gaps the welders didn't seem to mind. They were welding joints extremely fast. If I...

Re: Mild Steel housing welded with SS rod??

MiniBuggyBuild, One thing to remember is always use the higher grade of the two metals for filler. In this case if they are both mild steel ER70S-2 is the way to go. If you are going to use SS filler use 309. Will the 316L hold, maybe, but it is better to do it correctly than have to do it over. I s...

Ok as promised here is my attempt to silicon bronze a small cast part off of one of my vises. Re: What’s the best NEW AC-DC TIG welder for under $1,500?

frederick flintstone, Since you are using the machine as a hobbyist (I assume) I would recommend either a Miller Diversion 165/180 or the Thermal Arc 186. I own a Diversion I use in my personal garage, had it for 2 years now and have had no problems at all. I also take in out portably when the need ...

Re: suggestions from experienced shop owners

Matt, A book could be written on this topic and never cover it all. You will hear a lot of advise and different ways to do things and they all might be correct but maybe not for you. As for starting advise I would say first learn all the processes and basic metallurgy about the metals. Decide what y...

Wes917, I absolutely agree, anyone learning to TIG weld should learn with their hand. I was just putting feelers out to get input from those who have used it. It sits on top of my machine and collects dust. I was doing a welding demo for a local aircraft club and brought it along just for their inte...

Mick,
Bummer I was looking forward to seeing how this came out. I know what you mean about the projects. I have a saw that I thought I could rebuilt and use at the shop. It has been in my garage for over a year and I haven't even touched it.

Re: Cast Iron Vice Repair.

Peen it, but don't hammer the daylights out of it and stick it in the sand. If you have grinding to do/any cleanup you can do that first before you stick it in. Being out for a few minutes won't hurt a thing. Just don't leave it out to where it starts to really cool. I cant remember if I mentioned t...

Around here I see more of the older Lincolns on the pipe line rigs than anything else. I have only ran Millers and will say they are good especially the diesel ones.
