Re: 6g SMAW Test
Your fill pass looks a lot better! I would even hold it tighter yet, but there is nothing wrong with this one. Now when you put your cover pass on everything should be fine. When I am "teaching" someone 6G or even vertical up I always try to stress to not be afraid of the puddle dropping o...

Re: Cast Iron Vice Repair.
Preheat and then get to welding. In that video you see him peening when he chips the slag. It is what I do, although I never really thought of it in that way.
If you decide to weld long or little passed is really up to you. I have done it both ways with success.

Re: Cast Iron Vice Repair.
I absolutely agree with the post heat. For the items I have done we have always wrapped them up in insulation really good and they would still be warm in the morning. Also you mentioned processed to use at the beginning of this thread and I just wanted to share that MIG is a bad idea for those who a...

John,
I don't think 300 degrees will hurt anything. I hope you go the TIG route just for my interest.
Anyone else want to weigh in on this, could use another opinion.

Re: Cast Iron Vice Repair.
Honestly since you have it ready to go give the 309 a try. Worst thing to happen is it cracks and you do it again! I did some research on the Nomacast and it appears to have no nickel in it. The only difference I see between this and the nickel rod is obviously the nickel and it is not machine-able....

John
Here is where they were purchased from over here. No they are not the same as the nickel but I was offering them as a cheaper alternative.

Re: Cast Iron Vice Repair.
John, I would almost always stick with the nickel but that's just because I have had extremely good luck with it. For the 309, I would try the TIG but that's because I have never done this particular application. I think either way you will be good. Why is Nickel rod so expensive over there? It is b...

Re: Cast Iron Vice Repair.
John, It looks like you are fixing this as we speak but this is an example of a rod that might work well for you in this application and is inexpensive. I paid $9.99 US for 1 lb here at Rural King Ohio. Just a thought. You might think I am nuts, but I have seen adding a material (like Steve's piston...

Re: Cast Iron Vice Repair.
John, Looks like you have a project! I would honestly use the 99% nickel rod but I understand why you don't want to purchase any. Don't you have something like a Tractor Supply ( an hardware of sorts ) they sometimes have some nickel rod in smaller packs. If you only have 7018 I would recommend preh...

An update:
My local welding supply got back with me and said to their knowledge, they cannot find any in the Ohio area from their suppliers. The original company did indeed go under so if you find one pick it up. If you don't like it you might be able to sell it off!

Re: 6g SMAW Test
SkyDawg, One thing I see is you are not pausing on the sides long enough. See how your center in humped up, if you pause on the sides and just sweep across the middle, you will not have that. I believe that will cure your lack of fusion on the sides and allow less slag to get trapped (if any at all)...

Well now I will have to try welding upside down, if Steve can do it, so can I :D (don't know if I want to post the pictures though) At least I got the motor right. Looks like a great project. Very unique using the RB25DET motor. Over here you might not get good responses from a Goodguys show because...

We do it the same as you guys up there, but because we are down under we do it all upside down lol-FJ RB25 LOL that would make a great video. Here you go Jody, make a welding video welding upside down. As most of us know we do get into some awkward positions from time to time. So I assume the FJ is ...
