Re: tig water ??
Remember with anything there was a lot of thought and engineering that went into the fluid sold specifically for TIG coolers. I would recommend that you stick with the genuine stuff. Coolant for TIG is not conductive and antifreeze for RV's and cars is. You also want distilled water. That is not to ...

Re: Tig Welding Cast with Aluminum bronze
Wkydd1, Don't know if I will catch you in time. I think you will get various opinions on this and they all could be right. You want to pre-heat to 400 degrees with the alum bronze. My question is if it is a large repair why wouldn't you use 99% nickel rod? I do not have much experience with the alum...

Re: Practice
I think any welder who is honest with themselves will say they will never stop practicing. Some could say we are practicing everyday on the job. I still do practice. Me and a engineer are supposed to go to Brazil soon and along with teaching him how to stick weld I practiced my overhead and noted we...

Re: I got to much extra cash, what should I buy???
AK, Without hesitation I would go with the Dynasty 200 DX. I have used one for 8 years with no problems or complaints. I used it with out a cooler because it was our primary portable stick/TIG unit. It runs 6010/6011 and 7018 very well. One thing that was nice in our situation is the Auto-Link. From...

Re: TIG Pen
Our local weld supply, Albright Welding Supply. I think the story was someone wanted one and they had to order a min of 3 or 4. I bought the last one out of that bunch. If memory serves me right I think that price was at or lower than their cost.

Re: bet you never thought of this????
As far as my opinion of the time I spent on your theory, I would not say it was a waste at all. I learned something. Although swinging the sledge hammer was kind of a pain in the butt! I had absolutely no porosity in my gasless welds but that is not to say someone else wouldn't as well. I would find...

Re: bet you never thought of this????
I did run a bead with no gas and it ran fine. It seemed to look hotter with the gas but I don't know. I did run beads side by side and noticed no huge difference in welds. It seemed that with gas the slag was blown away from the weld puddle while welding. The gas weld was a little wider but not by m...

Re: bet you never thought of this????
Here you go. First specs. Wire Harris Ten Gauge mild steel self shielding .035. Wire speed 400, 23.5 volts. Gas C25, 25 cfh. I grabbed a couple pieces of 1/4" plate and beveled them with a 1/16" land, 3/32 gap. Single pass, I got full penetration of approx. 3/32 ish. I am only doing this t...

Here is a picture of me holding the TIG Pen. You insert wire of choice in the end and roll the wheel with your pointer finger. I think the youtube video shows it better though.

TIG Pen
Want to see if anyone has used a TIG Pen before. I picked one up a year ago at our local weld supply on clearance because they couldn't sell them. I have mixed feelings on the Pen. I like it but it would take a little getting used to if you were going to use it everyday. I never remember to grab it ...

Re: propane
John I would go with the 100#ers. We use them for cutting and I use them for heating my garage. I like the fact they last longer than gas grill tanks. However the smaller tanks will be more portable. My wife hates it when I run out in the garage and come raid the gas grill. I pay $50 for a 100# tank...

I am not on the same page I think. Are you talking any flux core or is there a special wire for this technique? I will try it if you explain exactly how they do it and what wire.

Re: bet you never thought of this????
AKweldshop Well curiosity has got the better of me...I went in the basement and found the self-shield flux core, changed gas to C-25 and welded 1/4" test samples with it in the 1G position, 3/32 gap, no backing bar. Remember this wire has been open for over 2 years and my basement is not the dr...

Re: best all around helmet?
I must fall into the collect weld helmet category as well. I have lost count of my helmets. Personally I don't think there is one best all around helmet. If you went with AD its all good till the batteries die at the most inconvenient time. If you go with a fixed than there will be times you wish yo...

Re: Hobby plasma or other metal cutter?
Fallon, I have mixed feelings on cutting processes. Plasma is fast, accurate and clean but you are limited to your shop for repairs. A torch set can/is portable and when the need arises you can take the torch set out in the field, but requires a little skill to use. I am blessed to have plasma, oxy/...

WOW! I have one of these HF band saws in the garage and will never look at it the same again. I never even thought of upgrading it the way you did. Looks great. I do wonder what TPI blade you use. I think I have 10ish TPI on mine but it has been a long time since I bought blades. I had been getting ...

Re: HELP PLEASE! Taking test tomorrow! 2g/3g
I personally have hot taken a test with dual shield but I friend of mine did and he failed his first because of slag inclusions. Clean, clean, clean is the only advice I can give. I have a habit of running a wire wheel on a grinder to each weld, but they might only allow a hand held wire brush. Good...

Re: bet you never thought of this????
While I absolutely agree that flux core left out for to long shouldn't be used for critical welds, I am curious if you could get that wire pass inspection/bend test. I have some .035 self shield wire that has been in the basement for about 2 years, I will try to get it out some time and put your the...
