Re: Shoot the breeze

Unfortunately, years ago, most of the familiar faces (regulars) moved on. A few have passed away and who knows about the rest. I was unactive for quote a while. I've tried to reach out to Otto but have not been successful. Mick is still kicking but hasn't been on in a while. Taked to him a week or ...

Re: Shoot the breeze

I guess that all depends on your perspective and if you are pesimestic or optimistic. For me life is fine. When you really boil things down it could be a LOT worse. Still able to provide a living for my family and enjoy some hobbies so it is not all that bad. For those who might see things as glass ...

Well, not the easiest post to make but we need to make it. The Welding Tips and Tricks Podcast has come to a end. We have enjoyed the 6 years of episodes and all the support we have received from the welding community. Like many things in life our lives have changed and priorities have changed to wh...

Wow, this is a old thread.

I might have to try spraying the ceramic spray on drill bits and see how well it works. Interesting.

Re: Setting up new shop- need ideas

In my opinion they are great. I say that partly because I see a lot of jobs being "taken" by a cobot because of a lack of those willing to work and partly from an employers perspective. I can have a person with little welding experience running one a lot of times quicker than training the ...

Re: Setting up new shop- need ideas

A iron worker and a lathe are good ideas. I also would like to be able to sand blast smaller parts so will look into a solution for that as well. The thing with the plasma table is yes, most around me have one. We are mostly going to focus on making parts for our clients and some products we have wa...

Setting up new shop- need ideas

We are expanding the shop and I want to get some input. We have a 20' x 50' finished side and are adding an additional 20' x 50'. This means new concrete, walls, electrical, etc. The shop has no power at all so basically this in "new" construction. They will be doing the concrete soon and ...

Re: Shoot the breeze

So I started this thread in 2014 as a way to talk about whatever. At the time it seemed we would follow rabbit trails and highjack a topic (probably still that way). I thought it would be cool to dig this thread back up and see what happens. Most that contributed to this are gone but I would love to...

Re: 3/8 V-Grooved backed plate 3G test 7018

With you saying the bead is to one side I would say rod angle. You also mentioned fit up being a issue. I would get that backing plate as tight as possible to your test plates. Gaps won't be your friend. Pictures would really help us help you.

Re: Need Advice on Mid-Level AD Helmets - Up to about $200

I have 4 or 5 of the Lincoln helmets and they seem to be good for the money. Miller is good as well. I would honestly see if your local welding supply has any in stock and look through them or see if anyone local to you will let you run a bead through one they own. Beyond that these days pick one an...

Re: cons of spray transfer

ntm, One "con" of spray transfer is it can cause serious warpage if not handled right. Go too slow and it will put too much heat input into the part and can warp it pretty bad. Of course spray might not be the best for sheet metal applications. It really depends on what you are doing with ...

Re: New to Tig.... where to start?

Welcome to the TIG welding addiction! When we teach classes we always have students start out doing dry runs. No filler to worry about at first. This lets you focus on identifying the puddle, which is perhaps the most import part of welding. Once you can hold a consistent puddle in a straight line t...

As to your question, I have not heard of anyone not allowing you to look at a little book of settings. Might impress your potential employer as well.

Welding Books

I am working on a video showing different welding books. I have the "normal" books such as Metals and How to Weld them, most of the books Lincoln sells and a few odd balls. I figured before I finished videoing I would see what books you would recommend and what you would like to see. -Jona...

Re: Lincoln 350MP Flux core or pulse

Honestly either will work. The Dual shield might have better elongation properties, good for this application, but they both would have the same tensile strength, in theory. Don't over think it. Crank it up so to speak and weld it.

I disagree with Bughunters statement earlier that you need to use "4140 filler" or something like that. I have welding procedures that use regular ER70S-6 on up to 100ksi fillers. If this repair is a concern where is your procedure? This will give you everything you need to know. Perform a...
