Re: Back Purge
@ Steve Do you mean that purging with nitrogen is easier and cheaper? @ Len Purging with nitrogen is said and also studied that you actually get better corrosion resistance than with argon. For example in duplex grades nitrogen as a root gas forms a thin layer of austenite on the surface of the meta...

Re: Back Purge
Thanks Jonathan! Nitrogen pick up on open root didn't surprise at all. Same thing as you weld with shielding gas that contains nitrogen. But when done with closed root, that is another story. Pick up will decrease quite much, I guess. Also increase of nitrogen in the metal up to 1100 ppm's. Is it re...

Re: 24 L tank with mirror finish. Any polishing ace's here?
Ok fellow welders problem is solved.
I changed those flap wheels to angle grinder and sanding discs. Dropped rpm's down to 2000 and started to work that baby from grits #80-1000. After that polished it up with two soft mops. Results... Near perfect!
Thanks guys!

Re: 24 L tank with mirror finish. Any polishing ace's here?
I think standard flap wheels inherently cause ripple marks - but the " interleaf " type that has " Scotchbrite " material in between each layer is better - I have had good results not using flap wheels but doing virtually the whole process with mops - we have a compound called &...

Re: At home purging.
You will get colour for sure, but that's not the end of the world. Only corrosion resistance will be weakened. Will it prevent sugaring? Interesting.. maybe it will indeed, but how to make sure that you have enough argon at the end of the weld? I would personally get that second flow meter. Perhaps ...

Re: 24 L tank with mirror finish. Any polishing ace's here?
Hmm usually #320 is fine enough, when sisal's are used. However I haven't tested to go finer, maybe it will help a bit. I will give it a go. I also thought that maybe flap wheel won't deliver equal pressure, which could cause those waves :?: Specially with grit sizes #40 and #60. From this site I ha...

Re: You know what stinks when back purging...
Indeed if you know that you do a lot of same pipe size, then it will be a real bargain :) Let's wait for 5 years and I think we can then have cheap 3D-printed metal parts. Definitely post some pics. I will add some too in near future. Also I need to do a new welding program with orbital, so I will p...

Re: the Stigma of Aluminum Tig
Welding and weldability.... Two different things. I agree that welding aluminium is not that hard, when welding is referred to have a nice bead and little penetration. Specially it's not hard, if you have watched Jody's videos and follow instruction how to use once a second rule and how to set your ...

Re: You know what stinks when back purging...
@Markus- when you do sanitary pipe do you do straight pulls or little circles for autogenius? Sorry for the delay... On thin pipe I weld without filler (90%) and I always use pulsed current. Something like 50 percent diffence (like 50 A and 25 A) on current and pulsing time 0.15/0.25 or 0.2/.04 or ...

24 L tank with mirror finish. Any polishing ace's here?
I have to do couple of little tanks in near future. Those will be made of 316L 306x2 mm pipe and surface must be polished to mirror, including weld beads. I did some small testing today and noticed some waviness on surface. Nothing too bad, but I just wondered that is it possible to get those waves ...

Re: ESAB caddytig 2200
Raising this one up again.
Caddytig have superb pulse settings. You set your pulse time with seconds instead of playing with frequency and percentages.
Worh trying IMO.
I really hope that Esab could let one machine for testing.

Re: Argon purge weak when tank is close to empty
You should't ever let your gas bottle to get fully empty. Otherwise they may have problems at filling station when refilling the bottle. So using bottle to fully empty and risking the weld itself serves absolutely no purpose. That last remaining gas won't save you that many dollars. In atmosphere th...

Re: You know what stinks when back purging...
That black spot is on outside of the pipe? Sometimes you can't avoid those black stops at the end of the weld. Those are just "inpurities" from metal or from your tungsten or gas. Nothing to worry imo as long as those are eliminated with pickling. Btw do you clean parts before welding?

How do you cut tungsten before grinding? I mean when you take a new tungsten and cut it in half for example. Some grades tends to leave micro cracks when cutted wrong.

It always pisses me off when people automatically praise welders who can weld x-ray welds. So many times x-ray d...

Just a quick weld i made for sanitary piping today. Nothing special. Notice how well polished surface show traces of oxygen. Those little blue areas tell that oxygen content in root was around from couple of ppm to maximum 10 ppm or so.
