Visibility welding seams

Alright folks, My ass (job) is riding on correcting this problem so any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I've never had any problems welding Tee Joints or beveled plate, but my new job requires me to weld A LOT of sheet metal seams. Problem is as soon as I strike the arc I can't see sh*t but the a...

Re: Entry Level Welding help

ok... so what is a close to you starting point? Might as well try to make this as easy I we can. I can prolly get you work around here if you are good. Might not be what you are looking for permanent but could get you some cash. Colorado is bit far for me to go it alone (I'm in Kentucky.) If I have...

Entry Level Welding help

I just finished Welding School 2 weeks ago. I'm certified 4G unlimited thickness for Stick ,Flux Core, MIG, and 3G TIG. I have about a year of basic fabrication experience building steel cabinets, but most of my training is geared towards the structural stuff. Can anyone put me the in ballpark of ho...

Re: 4F Open Root

First off...my bad on the thread title. It should have been 4G not 4F.
I used a backhand technique and pulled the rod to me to help with visibility. Passed the test.
I'm finishing up my state unlimited thickness 4G cert. test strips now. Today is my last day of class.......now I need employment.

Re: 4F Open Root

I've got a pretty decent welding hood. (Optrel Satelite) The lens is could be changed, but I'm thinking its something else. I dunno I'm thinking this might be a unique situation so I'll post whenver I determine the problem and solution.

4F Open Root

Testing overhead next week. 6010 root with 7018 filler and caps. The BIGGEST problem I am having is with visibility. For some reason whenever I weld overhead (any process) there are points throughout the weld that I lose sight of everything but the arc and hence I cant tell where I'm going. Has anyo...

3G TIG

Alright...So I aced the 1G TIG. (Thanks for all the advice by the way) Now I got a 3G coming up in a few weeks. I'm using a lay wire technique for my root and running it at about 110-120 amps. Filler and cap passes 140-150. Still 3/8 material with a 35 degree bevel. My beads are laying down good all...

Re: 1G TIG open root

Yea we are using the keyhole method.

I keep hearing from a lot of people that the more passes you can fit into a grove weld the better, as opposed to using a larger diameter filler rod or increased wire speed.
Any thoughts on this?

Re: 1G TIG open root

My welding instructor said he didn't want the root pass any hotter than 75 amps. ( I forgot to mention there is no landing on the plate)

3/8 plate...haven't graduated to pipe yet

I ran the root 100 amps and the subsequent passes at 145 amps.

1G TIG open root

Just started workin' on this one. One thing I noticed is that the root pass is very prone to heating up during the filler and cap passes; causing a decent "wedding band" root to end up looking like a sagging piece of shit. I used a 3/32 tungsten and filler metal, but I have the option of u...
