Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Andrew, nothing like trying to put together a jig-saw puzzle without all the parts huh? Nice work guys! I have to admit when I saw the size of the slots hogged out of the case it was a "take a deep breath" moment. There's also bits the the pics don't show like empty spaces where bolts use...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Awesome! What a cool job, and customer! Can you share your equipment type and its setup? I don't know sheet, but it seems like alignment would be dubious at best for such a critical application as, precise, gear meshing. Was there any kind of jigging or alignment tooling supplied by the customer to...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Awesome job! Can you share your equipment and its setup? Thanks. The machine I use primarily at work is my OTC AVP300 inverter 300 amp Tig welder from Japan. I bought it new about 12 or so years ago and at the time it pretty well state of the art. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/awill4x4/Wor...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

For me, again something a bit different. This is the gearbox casing of a 1930's Bugatti racecar. This is a matching numbers chassis, engine, gearbox car to it's important the same gearbox is installed regardless of the time needed to repair the gearbox. The guy we deal with specialises in servicing ...

A radiator that's a little different

Every now and then we get something in at work that's a little different. This project is for a regular customer that likes to push the envelope on his sons racing 2 stroke Go Kart. The class he runs in is a worldwide class and he wanted the smallest possible radiator with the maximum cooling and le...

Re: Footpedal....No sir!

Hey, Do you have any photos of your work? I like the thought of welding roll cages, The last line of defence and all that. Good call on the kempiis, all bells and whistles but you need to be able to use it, to make them worth it, Id love to use pulse at work but we dont have procedures for it. Mick...

Re: Footpedal....No sir!

Thanks for the reply, Andrew, That's much of what I wanted to know. I'm considering a homebuilt aircraft, and have several options, including wood and aluminum, but the engine cage will most certainly be 4130. I'm absorbing as much as I can from anyone with experience. We are not "accredited&q...

Re: Cats paw copes/scarphs

Thanks for your detailed description Jeff. I'll just try to get my head around a couple of things if I may? I'm a right hand Tig welder so weld travel for me is right to left with filler fed from the left hand. With your "reverse" welding technique would your torch angles remain the same a...

Re: Footpedal....No sir!

Andrew, So you weld a lot of 4130... I hear conflicting information on this... I'm told when you don't have the facilities to normalize, that E80-S2 is the better rod, when you can, at best, do PWHT. What do you normally use on 4130, and how do you post-weld treat it? Thanks, Steve S. Steve, becaus...

Re: Footpedal....No sir!

Echoing Mick, Welcome! I hadn't considered the price-point on remotes... The Miller-branded foot pedals we use are around $400 US. The weldcraft thumb remotes are about $150. I always use a remote on aluminum, as well as any stainless thinner than sch. 40. (I used to do sch. 10 without, and had no ...

Re: Cats paw copes/scarphs

Yes, it is anodized and that's how we get it delivered to us. I haven't seen anyone else that welds it quite like I do, really. There's probably 6 different ways that I use, dependent on the type of joint. I'll be more careful with these the closer I get to the toe. We don't remove the anodized. Th...

Re: Cats paw copes/scarphs

Great tips TamJeff, and I love the work you do. On the boat tube welding you do is the tubing anodised? The pics of the welding work you do don't appear to be anodised but I thought I'd ask as the main players down south in Florida seem to use anodised tubing exclusively and use the "bump"...

Re: Footpedal....No sir!

Hey, I think the kempiis are dear no matter what. We run migs 400s and fastmigs and Mls 300. I heard the fast migs were about 7 grand. Far out??? We definitely dont get that much value out of them. 1.2 S6 and stainless flux cor, not really using any of the features. As well i heard the replacement ...

Re: Footpedal....No sir!

Mick, maybe the prices we get gouged by the welding companies here in Oz has something to do with it. My OTC machine at work probably wouldn't be an easy one to fit a pedal to but I was quoted prices of $1000+ for a foot pedal on my Kemppi MLS 2300 I use at home. For that price I'm happy to use the ...
