Re: Building steps / warpage control

Not sure yet. I know there will be glass involved but not sure of what look he wants. I told them I am interested in building the railing but not if they want every weld polished.

Got any suggestions?

Re: Cutmaster 42 / Plasma opinion

One of my customers has a High Def plasma. Definitely can't afford one of those ;)

I just finished up a project where the parts were laser cut. Really nice. Less warpage than a plasma or a shear.

Re: Building steps / warpage control

@ Len I welded the opposite side of the original weld. I didn't want to do the preload method as I figured there would be inconsistencies with the set up (and my patience). Step one (Verify the warpage) Stairs crooked.jpg Step 2 ( A line to guide my weld. I purposely went in the opposite direction o...

Re: Cutmaster 42 / Plasma opinion

Really? this is common? Most of the cuts I have seen are pretty straight. Now this is metal I buy or CNC machines I work on. I am not comparing CNC machines to free hand but the operators seem to rarely change out the consumables. I can see the "flame" come out crooked. What I do is turn t...

Re: Cutmaster 42 / Plasma opinion

@Welding Mike. A lot. More than 5°. It starts at 0 to 0.5° off but it rapidly cuts a notch in the consumable and begins to bevel. I machined a spacer to make sure I was keeping the torch 1/8" off of the material and true. It still gives me a bevel. Basically any thing thicker than sheet metal w...

Cutmaster 42 / Plasma opinion

I am borrowing a friends cutmaster 42. In short I am not impressed. I have used it in 2 different location and here is what I don't like. the consumables don't last. My LWS says I am getting typical usage (about 40 cuts) from the consumables. I don't buy it. I have used it at my shop, where the air ...

Re: Building steps / warpage control

Here are some pictures of the stairs and how they have progressed.

The metal has a 1.5" thick Mohogany tread on each one.

The finish is sandblasted with a coat of clear coat on each section.

Re: Building steps / warpage control

I was considering doing a second pass on the opposite side. Basically a blank pass to help correct the warp page. I have seen that done several times. Anyone have any experience with that?

Re: Building steps / warpage control

@AK weldshop, Cool link, the steps he is making are bent and those edges will help battle warpage. (in my experience). Really nice welds as well @ Artie fin HAha, true. Everything will get caught in the triangles. I left some distance from the stringer to help battle that. Also this isn't my house a...

Building steps / warpage control

hey guys, I am building some metal steps and I would like some suggestions on how to control some warpage. All the steel is HR carbon steel, laser cut and 1/4" thick. The issue I am having, at least in the demo I made up for the customer is the plate that will be receiving the mohagany boards i...

Re: welding and surrounding hazards

It is saw dust. More accurately cardboard dust. Also some paperwork the employees shove down rather than walk to the recycle bin. I have a buddy who used to weld and told me to be careful. Even if everything looks OK don't assume it is. He set fire to a wall and had to gut it to put it out. He could...

I have never seen that kind of helmet. What kind of welding are they generally used for?

You can never be too careful. I am taking apart some metal guarding and here's what i found in one of the posts.

You just never know.

repairing a broken shaft

Here are some pictures of a machining job where I had to weld in a shaft. This weld was done with an HTP tig set on arc at 100 amps.

DL88 I don't think this job is that bad. You hit all the keynotes. "Landed the best job so far" "The people are great to work with" "I have benefits. Dental, eye, etc" There may be better opportunities and you will have to weigh the options. My rule, if you go home happ...
