Re: New Member from England, Hello :D

Welcome
You certainly seem to have some nice gear.

Been many times in the "black country" when the foundries still were trying to give that name justice ;)

Re: welding 3/8" aluminum question

Try and taper off slower and add some extra filler. The more metal you have in the puddle the more it will shrink.

Have you watched where they pour metal in a foundry? You would be amazed how much metal they need to put in extra when the gate starts to cool off.

Re: 30 or 50A line?

Still seems quite high with 50 amps. You can pull nearly 3,7 kW from 16A @230 V it would be 5,5 kW from 50 A @ 110 V.

Re: 30 or 50A line?

Are you running 110V when in need of 50 amp breaker?

I run a 200 machine on 16 amps @ 230 V, which is what the spec for the welder says. I know our power grid is way different from yours but it looks luke a big difference.

Re: "Precision" Gunsmith Welding

Hi and welcome

What material are you trying to weld and what issues do you face?

It doesnt look like you have cleaned the mill scale off that rod.
You can weld it but it will be better if you clean it with a flap wheel first.

Re: Various welding projects

Sheet is 1,5 mm
Using a pedal, max 45 amps
1,6 mm 2% thoriated
Gaslens with #4 cup
1 mm 316 filler.

I start with the arc focused on the fitting. When it gets wet, angle down and start adding filler when sheet and fitting start to fuse together.

Re: Help/Advice needed on thin sheetmetal - TIG

I have only welded that thin with a pedal but this is how I would do it with only s torch switch. You are talking about butt welds, right? Start with some straight strips put together with 0-gap. Start without filler and try to find correct amps at a comfortable weld speed were they fuse completely....

Re: Inverted MIG on Al

My main problem doing inverted alu mig was not using a spool gun. I had 2/3:d of a 10 lbs roll of wire lying on the floor wgen finished. The short moments when I got the wire running welding went well. Thats why I cant give any good advice other than what John said. Take a sheet and try, then start ...

Re: Inverted MIG on Al

Cant give any advice than to be extra careful. The surface tension of alu oxide is quite high. So when overheating too much a larger amount can suddenly drop on you. When it drops into your sleeve it will hurt a little until it burns through the fabric and falls on your shoes. When laces have been b...
