Re: Bumper welding
Hi and welcome What nationality are you? You have to be really careful about heat input. Old chrome plated parts have a copper layer between the steel and plating so over heating it can cause the plating to blister or peel off. I have welded chrome plated parts with success but with tig and 316 fill...

Thats standard here, every house has 400V 3P incoming power. Of course most appliances is on 230 single phase.

Re: Tungsten differences
I have some of their Witstar tungsten, got some for free when I bought a welder. Compared to CK's ceriated it doesnt start as good. Part from that I cant say if they are better or worse than others. Probably more fair to compare with other "secret compounds" and then I like the Arctime bet...

Mig wire is great for projects with such thin sheet.
Did some outside corners on 0,7 mm mild steel yesterday, wouldnt use anything but 0,6-0,8 mm mig wire for that.

Re: High pressure Hydraulic lines
Any one that considers welding a high pressure line should be aware what effect even the smallest pinhole or crack could have if a hand gets into the leak path. Fluid under high pressure that leaks thru a crack or pinhole can cut thru a hand that at first look looks like nothing to worry about that ...

Re: Tungsten Sharpeners
I had an unpleasant surprise yesterday sharpening a rod on my bench grinder. Had the electric company here last week putting down a new power line to my house. Checked the compressor when they were done, motor ran in the correct direction, fine. Started the grinder and the tungsten disintegrated as ...

Re: Quick ? on SS fill rod selection
AndersK, 316 is more prone to hot short cracking when welding 301-304 stainless than 308/308L. On a very ridged structure this would be a problem. High pressure tubing and socket welds can suffer from this also. It's more corrosion resistant than 308 and if that's important, then by all means use i...

When would 316Lsi not be a good choice? Reason for asking is thats the only ss rods I have, and the only ones I can get from the. 3 stores in town selling it. And please go easy on my danish brother. In viking lands we usually get away with foul language outside the back room beer sessions. ;) Diffe...

Re: How to fill in holes blown in SS pipe?
Sometimes it is easier to start the arc on the filler rod, specially on thin material and with irregular gaps. Works well when filling holes too. Why do I know that? ![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

Re: Soldering copper
I'm still learning all the time so I was wondering if anyone can explain why you wouldn't be able to tig this? Copper need to be of de-oxidized quality to be tig'ed. You could probably tig others too but its not clean or porous free. Of the materials listed in first post I would expect them to be d...

Re: Bad gas example
Dont put them on your TIG, thats propane ;) The video I watched showed 300 bar tanks and had digital read outs saying what gas was in them. 300 bar is definitely not propane pressures. I have never seen any of these of course, so I'm just going by the video. Youre right about that. Was just a littl...

Re: Joining 6063 with unknown alloy?
Just tried to lay some beads on a different material to see if it behaved as bad. Image shows some 1050A 1,5 mm sheet. I welded it totally uncleaned. It has some salt spray on it so surface is a bit corroded. I was surprised how well it came out compared to the chair. Tried some different rods, the ...

I did the actual repair today. Got it down but not looking good. Got soot and pepper corn as soon as I started the arc. Tried to do the prep right. Ground down the old welds first with a flap disk then a velcro sanding pad. SS wire brush and then acetone. Clean tungsten. Some areas came out really g...

I see, so its all about surface tension then. Too high and the slag wont go under, too low and it will drip off.

Re: Joining 6063 with unknown alloy?
Made a test today. New 6063 tube welded to the old material using 5356 for filler. Wall is 1,5 mm (slightly less than 1/16")
Once it cooled I gave it some good whacks with a hammer until it finally cracked.
I'd say this is a pass

Joining 6063 with unknown alloy?
I will be welding 6063-T6 tubes to unknown aluminium alloy. It is some deck chairs with kinked tubes that I will replace. I dont have the chairs yet but is there a way to get any idea of what they are made of? Am I assuming correct that 5356 would be the best choice of filler if I have 1050 4043 and...
