Comments or insights from turbine welders...?

This is from AVWeb Flash for today, regarding the uncontained engine failure on a BA flight departing KLAS. I know that some of y'all have worked on these engines. I'd be interested in any comments or experiences. "Inspections of older GE engines on airliners around the world could begin in the...

That's a great idea, Gordon. I've got a horsey friend here in Texas that will probably appreciate one of those. Well done.

Re: What I welded today, stick section!

No pics yet, but we made some progress yesterday on a friend's carport. Put another nearly 8 hours on the Bobcat 225, and started getting my hand back at SMAW. Been a long time since I burned any real amount of rod. Of course, there is almost a mutual exclusivity between regaining one's touch and us...

If you do mild steel and you want a pretty much bulletproof coating, I'd suggest powder coat.

Re: Help to minimize additional work

I'm visualizing a device -- don't know if it's commercially available or not, but a competent machine shop could build it -- that's basically 2 mag drill bases connected by a couple guide bars, and a hand cranked or power feed screw. A carriage on the bars/screw carries a drive motor and a slitting ...

I have a feeling if you took a Dale Carnegie course you failed. I got a good laugh at that. I've read his book, "How to win friends and influence people". Excellent read. I use it often, but selectively. Sometimes, you have more influence by being very direct, and skipping the dance aroun...

100 milliamps is enough to cause death. 100 mils can cause death if administered to moist sub-epidermal tissue. And would probably have to include the heart in the circuit path. It won't cause death across dry epidermis. A lot of folks have been made "scared of electricity" by that commen...

Jody did mention in the video to be careful not to hit the edges of the stock with the bristle disk because it knocks the bristles off. They do a heck of a job in the video, but I haven't gotten any because I don't think I want to have to baby a tool like that.

Analyzing welds that we see...

I spent last week in SLC for a work-related conference. As I was waiting in front of the hotel for the shuttle to the conference site, I found myself killing time by analyzing the welds on the base for the canopy over the front door area. I guess that makes it official -- I'm a welding geek!

Devcon used to make an epoxy-based, aluminum-filled product called Plastic Aluminum that was hell for stout. As far as I know, they still do. Their Plastic Steel is also a good product.

Eldon, If it's the same type of ferrite material that's used in electronic chokes and around cables to minimize interference, it would seem to be some kind of pressed powder. I can't say for sure because I've never experimented with a failed piece, but I've got a hunch that once there's a physical b...

When I was in college many moons ago, I took Canoeing as a PhysEd class. The school had an 8-canoe trailer, and since I was the only guy in class with a pickup I got tasked to tow the canoes to the lake which was our practice area. Over the course of the semester, I got to know that trailer pretty w...
