Re: Pipe newb, where do I start?
Is weaving different than walking the cup? I walked the cup on that weld, I thought the resulting bead was called a weave, whether you walk it or freehand it.

Re: Pipe newb, where do I start?
Thanks for the help, y'all! I just ran my first weave bead ever and it is pretty gnarly. I posted it in the "what I welded today" thread, if you wanna go see it. I will be going to the scrap yard Monday to scrounge up some scrap pipe and flat bar for coupons. I hope to try my first root pa...

Rupes, what made you want to use copper? And did you consider brazing?

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
Nice looking pass imo, if its something important and I see undercut I'll go over and cap it. But I find theres only so much heat/filler that can go in a single pass before the edges start melting and cutting back in too much. As for noisy grinders have you tried pulse on your angle grinder  I...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
Good first pass Nathan. The undercut was probably from the mill flake in the angle and not from lack of filler. If I get lazy and don't clean off all the mill flake from pipe it does the same thing. Thanks! That's encouraging. I knocked about 40% of the mill scale off with a file, but the kids were...

Nathan - I can't take credit for that, it's Rupe's. But it's awesome work isn't it? Kinda like high tech and steampunk combined. Love it. Guy's got skills. I think our motorcycle avatars are confusing people! Kym Damnit. Lol Rupe, awesome water cooler! Must be nice to use a wp20 now. I just used my...

Kym,
Awesome copper water cooler! That thing will be an awesome functional conversation piece in your shop. Ours are the mundane plastic ones. Did you consider brazing the joints?

Re: How long can you pratice?
Ha! Every time I pause for more than a minute, I turn it off at the bottle. And I am constantly painting all of my connections with soapy water, checking for leaks. Resigned to the cost now. Chalk up one more very expensive hobby! Kym I've got a leak somewhere. I'm gonna go through and Teflon tape ...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
What I welded today: My first weave ever. In the corner of an angle scrap. I forgot to turn on the gas, so there's porosity at the start. I touched the tungsten at the end. I didn't add enough filler, so there's undercut. Oh, and don't forget the mill scale! Lol! I pondered putting this in the "...

Pipe newb, where do I start?
I got my HTP flowmeter and gas hose in today (review coming soon, but I ordered it Monday, shipping was free, and the reg, hose, and 2# of er70s6 was just under $70, so I'm a happy customer going into it). Filler rod shipped separately and will be here later. Some of you know, but I will explain aga...

My local craigslist is STUFFED with those stupid snap on welders. Everyone is convinced they are made of gold, cause they're asking Miller prices for them. Makes you want to contact them and find out if they are crazy or just misled.

So. Much. Space. That is the goal. A workshop/shed big enough so that every time I see a bike for sale that needs some work, I can roll it in there and just add it to the queue, rather than thinking "I'd buy that...if I had anywhere to put it." Great stuff, WerkSpace. Living the dream. Ky...

Steve, could you inform me what's so bad about copper on galvy? I've not yet encountered this, and would like to know what to say when I do.

Re: Let's see pics of your home shop
Here's my very humble rig. Just my great little machine perched next to a not-very-great roadside sale bench that I've topped off with a 3mm steel top. Very much a stop gap set up that is okay for now so that I can practise and learn. The plan over the next couple of years is to buy a place and bui...

Here's mine. A little over a year ago, I bought my first AC225. Shortly after that, I needed the Lincoln flux core machine on the table in my pic for a handrail job. In that year, my total cost for every machine pictured was just over a thousand dollars. The other day, I used craigslist and eBay to ...

+1 for scratch start. I'm getting my rig set up, just lacking a $50 HTP flowmeter, which I should be able to get in a couple weeks. I have ran scratch start before and loved it. I figure that's what the old pioneers did, so its good enough for me. Plus, you'll get to learn to work with what you've g...
