Re: Closing a hole from one side?
Do you have a choice of welding the hole horizontally or vertically? I'm guessing that the hole needs to be filled as flat as possible and without a backing. If you can do it vertically it would be easier (at least for me) since you could just whip horizontal stringers until it is filled. With 6010 ...

Re: Flashed by Miller digital elite
I don't have the digital Elite, just the Elite. The first strike of the day will cause a flash. After that it works as it should.
It is annoying but closing my eyes on the first strike makes it liveable.

Re: AC Vs. DC
DC welding offers advantages over AC for most Stick applications, including: easier starts; fewer arc outages and sticking; less spatter/better looking welds; easier vertical up and overhead welding; easier to learn "how to weld" and a smoother arc. DC reverse polarity (electrode positive...

Re: AC Vs. DC
What’s the deal, I’ve herd DC is better than AC for SMAW. Is DC worth the extra money? You are kidding - right? If you have only "heard" about DC then see if you can find someone to let you use their DC machine. You can draw your own conclusions. Inverters seem to be favored over transfor...

Re: Repairs to wooburner fire
We heat our house with a free standing wood burning fire. Because we had it running to hot on Australian gum wood it has split the box on the lower edge. The split is about 7in long. What I need to know is, can I weld this using either 11 or 14 rods or is there a better way. Hope some one can help ...

Re: Rod oven
I would think that Las Vegas is dry enough most of the year to not worry about moisture in the 7018 rod flux. In Florida or anywhere back east that may be another story. Put them on a cookie baking sheet in the sun on a day with single digit humidity. I just use a old extra large electric fry pan. J...

Re: Inverter or transformer ~ which one would you get?
The Everlast PowerArc 200. Easy to learn on, great welds right out of the box. Even many pros like it. Others: light weight, small size, lots of power, long duty cycle. Transformers are very, very heavy but reliable in general. Not as smooth welds as with a inverter. I have both types and the two tr...

Re: Why isn't this forum more active?
There are several other welding forums that compete with this one. This forum is really a sub-topic of the wider WeldingTipsandTricks site rather than a stand-alone so is not accessed as much. The spamming problems of a couple of months ago seems to be under control but that will put people off and ...

Try a test cut on a corner or a scrap piece stacked six deep.
As the others have stated, the stack has to be so tight as to be one piece.

Re: Hard-faceing Rod
I am running of off a Thermal arc LM300. This is the hammers for a rock crusher that I am coating. I ground the metal clean and wire brushed the area around it. Also I have the ground at about 20in from the weld joints. Both the stinger and the ground clamp are rated for 400 amps. The rod runs fine...

Re: Hard-faceing Rod
Wow, that's a lot of amps to not have the arc be stable. I've only gone as high as 200A with 3/16" Stoody tungsten carbide rod but it flowed quite well so your settings should be about right if not a bit high. How about the ground? Is it on clean metal and close to the weld? You'd need a stout ...

Re: Northern Industrial Arc 200 230 Volt, 200 Amp Arc Welder
GWD, Does the welder need to be man-portable ? If not, and Stick (SMAW) is all that you plan to do, then consider a Miller Thunderbolt XL 225/150 AC/DC. Or, if you prefer the other color consider a Lincoln AC/DC 225/125. I bet 95% of the weldor's on this forum started with either of these two welde...

Re: Northern Industrial Arc 200 230 Volt, 200 Amp Arc Welder
Waiting depends on whether you want a 30 day money back offer and 5 year warranty from Everlast. What's the hurry - you've been around for years without welding so a couple of more weeks shouldn't make much difference. (Although I can relate to the "want it now" feeling.) Everlast has a lo...

OK. I have several chain saws but can't imagine the use of that expansion chamber unless there was some serious porting and tweaking going on. On the other hand, if the point is to demonstrate fabbing and welding skills it is quite impressive. How about some more details on the performance gains and...

Re: Your thoughts on the Everlast ProARC200 stick welder
Once again, jpence38 is right on target. The multi-unit route may not be the best for your anticipated uses. From my observances, multi-unit anything (stereos/cd/tape player/equalizer, off the shelf computers, etc.) tend to cut corners on one or more of the sub-units to keep prices down. If one comp...

Jim is correct about the Lincoln tombstones lasting. But with Everlast's 5 year warranty and our advanced ages it may not make a difference. The Lincoln transformer machines are very heavy while the inverters are extremely light and portable if that is a factor in your choice. The inverters we...

I put Velcro tabs on the helmet and then the corresponding tabs on a 2' x 2' piece of leather. It makes a nice hood that does not seem to collect fumes. Light shining in the back of your helmet will certainly cause a reflection issue so any way to reduce it helps. Moving the work so the light is in ...
