Re: Tig welding deoxidized copper

A single gas flow meter is the best for any gas because the weight difference between gases can be significant, and Argon and Helium are close to opposite ends of this scale. Argon being much heavier will lift the ball of that size and weight much differently than Helium, so the scale can only be ac...

Re: Fume Extractor/ MIG, TIG

I would think anything that has a draft that's enough to move the fumes away from the welder in a downdraft situation would have an effect on the cover gas, the fumes are trying to rise and you are trying to overcome that. I personally wouldn't use a downdraft table for Tig welding and I don't have ...

Re: Fume Extractor/ MIG, TIG

I think if you placed these higher volume units above where you're working that they would have little effect on your cover gas. Argon, which is heavier than air is going to go down initially then rise after it has been heated. The fumes from the welding itself is lighter than air so it's going to r...

Re: gas surge waste ?

One safety note I might add is to never add any fittings between the cylinder and the regulator unless you are sure that it's rated for that pressure. A minimum of 3000# and as few connections as possible. All hoses have a service life, even stainless braid hoses are only 10 years in high pressure s...

Re: first tig welds ever, please critique

Unless your user name is based on your welder nobody here is going to bash your welder. We see and welcome questions about welders and weldors from all over the globe. I'm going to let the many fellows here with everyday Tig experience critique your welds, but I can offer a welcome to the forum. Len...

Re: Tig welding deoxidized copper

I seldom use Helium for welding but if my math is right, you would need approx. 3 times as much flow with Helium for basicly the same coverage. I honestly don't remember the flow rates I used last time I had to use Helium. The last couple times I used it at all was a blend of 50/50 with Argon. I per...

Re: gas surge waste ?

In my mind the easiest cure for this would be to put the flowmeter in between the welder and the torch and then when the welder's solonoid valve opens it will still have the flowmeter to limit this surge.

Re: gas surge waste ?

Smitty, You can purchase a torch with a control valve right at the handle that will alow you to control this. My suggestion is to get good enough to weld on someone else's dime and you'll be able to block out that sound of your money being wasted. In a professional welding situation the purge benefi...

Re: Tig welding deoxidized copper

bb1127, The simple answer to the regulator question is yes, but there is a significant difference in the flow rate of Helium and Argon. Go to your welding store and see if they have a flow meter marked for both and get an idea what your settings would need to be on an Argon flowmeter. If you plan on...

I used to work with a guy who seldom if ever struck an arc without one of those little black cigars in his mouth, he needed a fume extractor for his helmet. Once a safety guy told him he couldn't smoke because of the fire hazard as he was lighting his torch off his cigar, ironic and a litle funny. I...

Ted' I remember from a recent post on welding safety that the Spay-on brand of antisplatter had Chlorine in it and this can be bad news when heated turning into Phosgene gas. Read the label on anything you are about to heat or weld now days. I'm no expert on the matter, but I believe the effects are...

The addition of silicon is for the mild steel to help flux it a little, but if you plan to use it on stainless to stainless of a different make up it has little benefit. I choose the 309L if I'm paying, it's good for stainless to stainless and stainless to mild and low carbon steel. They all work we...

What about using heat fence like you would use for body panels to keep them from warping? I haven't been around that kind of work in a very long time, but it did work well on sheet metal. If I remember right it was not all that expensive. It was like a rope that you formed to the panel around where ...

I think that the chemicals that are being used in and around welding have as much danger to them as anything that's physical in nature does. I think it would be prudent on our part to read the label on anything before we spray it on a area we are about to weld. Just because it's sold at the welding ...

welding small cast aluminum piece?

Dan, First off, you listed your best solution when you said you could easily make a replacement out of steel or Aluminum. You can try to weld it but don't get your hopes up on a great result. Most pieces that thin will end up on your shoes in a puddle before you have time to react. But heating it up...

Guys, The 4.6 designates the Argon has four 9's and the 6 in it's purity (i.e. 99.996) and the 5.0 is 99.999 or five 9"s as it's called in the gas world. Unless you're welding with a laser you're not going to see the difference between 40 PPM of impurities and 10 PPM. The standard for industria...
