Re: Another aluminum welding problem

@vwman1, When you buy Argon do you exchange your cylinder or do they fill yours? The reason I'm asking is if they fill your cylinder (as some small welding supply co.'s do) and it only takes about 10 minutes to get your cylinder back, they are filling it off a bank of large cylinders. Why is this im...

Re: Bronze welding for mild or 4130?

I haven't brazed (Bronze welding, so to speak) for about 30 years , but when I did I just used an Oxy/Act torch with a welding/brazing tip. If your looking for specific recommendations on models you'll have to wait for someone who does it still. These folks are sure to chime soon. Most people who do...

Re: Argon and it's Dangers.....

John, If that drain doen't leak water I don't think it's going to leak Argon gas either, but if your worried about it make your first project with your newly aquired tig welder constructing a cap that fits tight over the drain. Make it removable so the drain still functions while your not welding. S...

Sorry, I forgot the simple answer to your concerns. Buy or rent a 80 cf cylinder and you'll lower you chances to right around zero.

Re: Argon and it's Dangers.....

I'm not sure where you're reading these horror stories at. I've worked in the industrial gas business since 1995 and I'm not hearing these stories. But to your concern. OK you'll have to forgive me because I'm doing the math in my head, but here goes. Your garage as Brian said has around 2040 cubic ...

Re: Help with welding 2 different material thicknesses

Bosco, I feel you on the leg loss, my son just lost his left leg in an accident. As to your question, what amperage would depend somewhat on the size of the filler rod, but I would start with 1/16 tungsten and around 60-70 amps on DCEN with your tunsten sharpened to a sharp point. Every machine is a...

Re: Joining a pipe welding apprenticeship

There is quite a bit of pipe welding going on in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York with the Marcalus Shale natural gas feilds. Then there's always pipe welding going on in Texas and Oklahoma. A lot of these jobs are rig welders and some of them hire helpers and this might get you into the field. They...

Re: Question About Tig Welding Mild Steel

@ Steve, the CO2 is there to stabilize the arc, but what I don't understand is why anyone would think it's a good idea to add Oxygen to a welding sheild gas for any type of metal. This is counter productive in my mind. We are trying to keep Nitrogen and Oxygen out of the weld puddle. Now if you add ...

GreinTime is my oldest son for those of you that don't know it. He lost his lower leg in a firearms accident in October and is home rehabilitating and running up my food and electric bill, not to mention medical bills. But he's doing fine for those who are concerned.

He's taking that battle scar thing pretty serious already with the whole leg thing.

A little black tape to keep the light out and the hood's just fine. Now you see why I get him and his brother and sister helmets from HF.

Re: Tig welding 19 gauge low carbon steel

Ispoto, Tying to explain to somebody in print how to keep sheet metal from warping is almost as hard as mailing someone a haircut. There's actually more art to this than science. While you're welding you are putting heat into the metal at a very fast rate which causes the metal to expand and then it...

Now as to your trying to repair the cracked head, like Winston said you'll need to heat the entire head. With a str...

Re: Newbie question about consumables and Torch Heads

@ DrWoods. From reading different posts on Chinese welders (i.e. HF) I've come to the conclusion that they are not on the same page when it comes to fittings. I haven't seen the back of this type of welder, but I'm guessing it has an Oxygen fitting on it and not the standard Argon thread. There are ...

It's best that it happened there and not after the trailer was filled and had to be cleaned up and purged again. And lucky no one in your shop was walking next to it when the shiete hit the fan. I bet there was nobody left napping in the shop after that let loose. At least the engineers were smart e...

Two bits says the driver over cooled the pump and froze the bearings in the warm end of the pump. Then the instant you put the PTO in gear it finds somewhere for 50 HP to go. I've had the shaft come apart but never ripped the carrier mount out of the trailer though. @Mike, they're unique to cryo tra...

Rosie, What you're seeing is the silicon coming to the surface. Some is picked up from the parent metal but most is from the rod. The designation -S2 (ER70-S2) at the end of the filler rod type is the amount of silicon that's added to the rod. In a perfect world all this would end up at the end of t...

Re: Mixing gases

I'm pretty certain that everyone involved with this so far has a fair understanding of gases, flowmeters and regulators, but for those of you who don't, you need to know that you should only try and mix gases on the low pressure side of a regulator. Never try and mix gases on the high pressure side ...
