Re: Cap/Cover passes for the blind: part deuce
When you go for your next eye exam ask them to do a color blindness test. I've been dealing with your exact problem for the past 40+ years and it's frustrating to say the least. Most people will ask you questions like what colors do you see, that's like asking what something taste like. Since my las...

Re: New to welding, taking a class here in Texas
Will, Looks like you have a pretty good foundation to work from and now it's just going to take face time behind a helmet. You have to experiment with different positions and different thicknesses. Take advise from everywhere and keep a notebook near your welder. Write down what works and what doesn...

A 330 cf cylinder can be and sometimes are filled to 2400 lbs. @ 70 d/f. and remember that if the temp goes up so does the pressure. I'm not firmiliar with the regulator that comes on your machine, but most have a rupture disc in them and other also have a relief valve that resets itself. If the rupt...

I have to use an old ac/dc buzz box in the plant all the time, so scratch start is still the norm for me. It's still the norm for a lot more people in the field than most people would believe. I've fould that this type of welding is always going to pick base metal on your tungsten. If I'm welding a ...

If you're the one trying to make deliveries, I think they're one in the same. I used to deliver to nuclear plants and they were a serious pain to get in and out of. Prison is alot easier to get into, just don't pay your taxes.

Re: Sputter and splatter at start of weld
It works really well on round parts and doesn't leave arc burns on machined finishes. I've used them for years welding new ends on hydraulic cylinder rams. I even just lay it on my welding table and set what I'm welding on it. Plus it's recycling at it's finest, better than getting $.40 for a pound ...

John,
Lincoln has a rod called WT-6 I believe that's a cobalt rod that used to hardsurface stainless, but I'm not sure if it can be used to join cobalt to stainless.

Re: Is it possible to weld an axle?
reidy01, The short answer if you're talking about the axle shaft itself is no. The long answer is if you have a way to heat it to above 1650 degrees F. for an hour or more and then oil quench it, then bring it back to 650 d/F and let it cool slowly to room temp, after you weld it and then still not ...

You can use the other wheel for everday work and save the other for tungsten.

Re: cheap tungston grinding?
They usually come with one coarse and one medium, so see which one works best for you. Most people take one off and put a wire wheel on the other side. When you grind your tungsten make sure to use different parts of the wheel face or it will leave big grooves in it.

Re: cheap tungston grinding?
Rafter Aron, Any bench grinder wheel will sharpen tungsten and a cheap box store grinder is only $35. You can use an angle grinder but it will in fact contaminate your tungsten if you have ground anything else with it. If your not making any critical welds, who cares. Now if your like me and you hav...

I recently bought the same welder and had the same problem. As Steve said it was the ground, so I changed it out with a 1/0 cable and 200 amp ground clamp and problem went away. Lifes Good.

BTW I see a chipping hammer in the picture with your Tig torch, if you need that when you're Tig welding, you might be doing it wrong.

Re: So I got some TIG supplies . .
Arczone has them both and the Weldcraft numbers are 17GL116, 17GL332 etc. Didn't look at their insulator number though, sorry. If your local supplier hasn't heard of weldcraft, you might not actually be in a welding store, look around for canned goods.

Weldcraft also makes a stubby gas lense, but I don't know their numbering system to tell you which ones to look for. You might be better off buying the kit that comes with everything. I order almost all my consumables online. For one they're usually way cheaper and I don't have to deal with the guy ...

Re: So I got some TIG supplies . .
I have no scientific proof to this, but I figure that the only real advantage to using a extra large gas lense and then necking down to say a #6 orfice would be that it cools the tungsten down. This would in a sense raise the amperage capacity of a given torch. But at the same time I think it would ...

Re: Black soot on ali welds.
I've read that the black soot is actually Magnesium oxide and if they are using 5356 and or are welding 6061 they both have higher Mag. content. If that's the case you might need an adjustment in gun angle or even try upping the flow rate on the shield gas, which will add to the cost. Not that a pos...
