Re: which rods are best for vertical?

I have been welding for 40 years but not full time welding back in the 70's I was working at a tractor dealer but then nothing was welded vertical because nobody could do it so everything was welded flat .. this sometimes caused problems!! when I left there I went lorry driving for a number of year...

Well, I wasn't setting out to offend, just making what I mistakenly thought was a light hearted comment. So apologies, let's move on, don't take it to heart, let's get back to welding.

Noah, don't take me so seriously. But you did ask the original question, so you must have realised you mightn't like all the answers. Go for it if that's what you really want.

Re: how do you guys feel about tattoos?

There are many answers to the question the OP asked but he said nothing about ridiculing others that you don't agree with did he? Obviously you don't like tattoos and that's fine but to ridicule those that do like them...well...And as far as wearing someone else's artwork..Do art collectors paint t...

Re: how do you guys feel about tattoos?

Near identical tats? Do you check them out so well that you can tell that? I have yet to see 2 people with the same ink...in 53 years...Could you elaborate?[/quote] Well I don't bend down with a magnifying glass, but yes, there are a lot of very similar tats out there - I did say near identical. The...

i don't have any tattoos, nowadays I think that makes me the individualist. It cracks me up seeing all of these near-enough identical tats on people trying to "look different".

Multi power, that was it. I remember switching to low and sailing past the farm entrance. If I remember correctly, and I think I do, you could tow start the Fords, but only if you'd stopped them in high dual power and didn't touch the lever. I'm talking the old '70's ones. You're right on the 544, t...

Re: Flatbed work....

Noddybrian, my Dad drove one of those 544 hydro on a baler. He said it was the best baler tractor that he'd had in 50 years. There wasn't much that it did well apart from that, but that one job it excelled, especially on some of our fen crops where the combines spat the straw out of the back in lump...

Re: Welding in the rain.

In the same way, that some shooters are recoil sensitive and others are not, folks have different reactions to electric shock. What is a tickle to one may well be a horse kick in the face to another. It's a very subjective thing. Difficult to say with any accuracy what another person feels. And wha...

Re: Welding in the rain.

Dc current won't hurt you. You'll get a tickle once in a while tho. DC current won't hurt like a kick in the face from a horse won't hurt. Mind you, I've never been kicked in the face by a horse, but I have had several belts from DC and I can assure you it does hurt. Not only does it hurt but it ca...

Re: Weird Ripple Patterns on new 6013????

I struggle with the shakes a bit, wet or dry. I nearly always hold the stinger with one hand, the end of the electrode with the other. You get less arc strikes that way, and it's easier to keep a consistent bead until your rod has burnt down. As soon as you feel the heat through the glove, move your...

Re: Weird Ripple Patterns on new 6013????

Vincenzo, it would be helpful to know what current you're running at. I also see an issue with angle, as your vertical plate is showing a bit of undercut. As for the pattern, had you been on the ale the night before? Looks a bit more like an attack of the shakes than anything else.

Re: Need help with forming initial puddle

Look up "AC welding" on YouTube, there's an excellent old GE film, and although we aren't talking about AC here, the film shows perfectly the drag angle and how it needs to change during the run. Basically you need less drag angle at the start, i.e. Your electrode needs to lay forward more...

Re: Vertical up with 6013 for college

Running DCEN the electrode burns noticeably slower with 6013's. The reason for keeping the apex of your Christmas tree higher is so you don't make a slag trap in the root. You can make the deposit a little more convex by holding the apex a bit longer. Try to read the pool rather than relying on &quo...

Re: Vertical up with 6013 for college

First off you need to get comfortable, or you'll never get an even run. Find a way of propping yourself. Then keep your electrode close to 90 degrees to your direction of travel, no more than 5 degrees either side of this. Lastly, hold the edges longer, the middle will take care of itself. Are you d...

Re: First Stick Welds and problems with electrodes

Looks better, but a little concave, bordering on undercut. This will sound a bit counter-intuitive, but if you run a little higher on the current, about 80-85, you will find you'll be able to run a bit more upright, about 75 degrees, which will help your root penetration. Also you'll be able to trav...

Re: First Stick Welds and problems with electrodes

With Murex, dcen, 80-85 amps, short arc (not quite dragging) and turn the arc force off, they penetrate well enough without it unless the steel is a bit crapped up. Too much arc force makes them behave like fireworks.

Cutoff wheels that shatter or other accidents involving them have cost me about 90 stitches over my career (when I tell the story now it is up to 102 stitches). I don't get this bashing or snobbery. Surely it's primarily the most suitable process for the job that we should be using, or the one that's available? I work with a couple of lads who grab the Tig for everything, suitable or not, and they think I"m a dinosaur for using smaw as much as I do. Th...

You should have your helmet set between 10 and 11 for mig like your doing. You can't make a blanket statement like that, John. As we get older the shade required varies, it also varies with ambient light conditions, how much voltage/current you're using, quite a few variables. To the original poste...
