Got my butt kicked tonight
Trying to weld on an aluminum tab onto an aluminum tube for a little project. Could not get this to go. The spot I am welding to is the seam between an end cap and the tube. Tabs are 1/8" thick, as well as the tubing. I welded it with 4043 filler. Tube is 6061 and the cap is 3003 (it's what I c...

HTP gear?
I am looking to get a dual flow meter in order to back purge while tig welding stainless. HTP has one for $100 while the big names are $300+. I'm just a hobby tinkering kind of guy so not making a living doing this. That said I hate getting cheap stuff that doesnt last. Thoughts on HTP?

That's a big help. Outstanding.
I think I'm going to get a 17 torch for now. Gotta get something smaller than this 26.

Right after I post I find Jody's vid I've been looking for... Still a bit confused, especially on the different hardware pieces, such as stubby lens, insulator size / length...
If this was easy, everyone would do it...

Right now I'm using a 26 air cooled torch that came with the unit. I got a gas lens kit with it and that seems to be working ok. I even have my tig finger! The problem I have is that with the gas lens and the cup, the torch is so big I have to really contort my hand in order to rest and get a good a...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
I made... a cube! 3" by 3" cube in .125" Aluminum. Just for practice. I might put some divots or silicon bronze some pips and make it a die.
150 amps on foot peddle but never got there. 3/32 electrode and 1/16 4043 filler. About 120 hz, no pulse.
Fun little project.

So I hit the remnant pile again at the junk yard / metal supply place. Got some 2x1x.125 square tubing and 1x.125 flat bar. All 6061. I cut the flat bar into 2" tabs on went to practicing. Once I get going I seem to go ok. So this little set up gave me some tacking and starting practice. My pro...

Soot on arc start
Very new to welding, TIG welding in particular. When doing my bead practice, every now and then I get a black soot ring when I start the arc. Seems to do it on my first arc on a cold piece but sometimes later. I thought maybe my argon hadn't gotten to the nozzle by the time the arc started so I set ...

Re: Getting puddle going in aluminum
Was messing with this today. I think I was definitely trying to go to soon. Also, as was mentioned earlier, you can't hang out with your filler rod too close to the arc as you are moving along. Especially the 1/16" stuff. Just melts away! I'm getting the hang of it. Just need that under-the-hoo...

Getting puddle going in aluminum
Total noob here with TIG welding. Well... Noob on all this really... I've watched Jody's aluminum drill videos about 20 times, starting to quote him in parts of it. Got my aluminum, some filler material. Using 3/16 aluminum (what I got from a remnant pile) and 3/32 lanthanated tungsten. Foot pedal s...

Re: Sputter and splatter at start of weld
So tonight I made a grounding assist device like Jody described in his video. What a difference that thing makes! Wow. From now on, around here, it's known as the Jody Wonder Braid. Rapunzel's got nothing on that thing. Smooth starts to the welds, nice and clean.

Re: Sputter and splatter at start of weld
I'll update my ground and make a ground assist device like Jody has in his video.
For the grounds, what's the difference between a 200A ground and a 500A ground, besides 300A? They both look exactly the same, at least online? Is bigger better and I should just get the 500A one?

Re: 10 Things I've Learned in a month or two of learning to
Yeah, 9 kids... That's why I have other hobbies now. One of my boys does quite a bit of the welding so we are learning together. We are building a jetski stand and after that it'll be a welded tube laundry sorter. Wife put In a request for that after somebody smashed up her PVC one. Might have to pi...

10 Things I've Learned in a month or two of learning to weld
1. You will master the eraser before the welder. 2. Grinding on things makes them hot. Welding on things makes them incredibly freaking hot. 3. Your shirt CAN catch on fire from grinding sparks. 4. That polarity thing? Pay attention to that in the welder directions. 5. GMAW. The G stands for GAS. Tu...

Sputter and splatter at start of weld
Very new to welding, not that my question just wouldn't scream that... Using a Lincoln PowerMig 180 dual plugged into 240v. Welding on some .065 wall square tubing using .025 wire. When I start the weld, initially strike the arc, I get a bunch of spattering and sputtering, then the arc takes off and...

First project - welding table
So, got a welder as I've always wanted to learn. Been around it for years at work and family. I get set up and build a decent size table. Nothing fancy here, nothing like some of the ones seen in the forums. I still need to put a shelf in the bottom. And the wheels while rated for quite a bit will h...

PaterNovem is a rough translation of "father of nine". So, yes, I have nine children. My second son, child number 4, is also learning to weld. We might do a go cart or some other such project this winter. One of my future projects is to make bathroom fixtures of sturdy enough material to w...

Welding Newbie Hello
Been around welding, fabrication, heavy and light industry my whole life. Father was a machinist and a welder. Never picked it up. Well, seems like there is always something around here that needs to be welded so with some help of some folks at work that do welding at my plant, I got set up at home....
