Personely donot own a Viking AD shield but I have wittnested 3 AD lenes destroyed by young welders trying to see arc by being so close to arc heat litrely warped and ruined lenes expense lessons

I have welded tons of this type plate how ever never used dual shield position permitting(flat)only 7024 jet works good may save time and money over reworking just a thought

I agree clean is the answer I have repaired several cummins rock damanged pans old trick if you have access to a oxy acetylene torch lite torch leave oxygen off cover cleaned surfaces with carbon soot then turn ox on start pre heating until soot starts to loosen and come off pre heat helps boil dirt...
