Re: Harbor Freight 20 ton Press Upgrade
Those are some nice upgrades. Some of the best money I’ve spent was putting casters on mine. It was awkward to move and in the way 28 days a month before.

Re: Steel becoming magnetic after grinding?
I’m pretty sure it was used for some type of drilling operation. Had big square tapered male threads and female sockets on the other.

Steel becoming magnetic after grinding?
I bought some used 3” sch 80 pipe for a project, I beveled the ends and cleaned inside and out to bright metal then could not get an arc to start to save my life. After about an hour of switching leads, machines etc I discovered everywhere I used the grinder had become very strongly magnetic. Has an...

Vise Grip Crank Handles
I added some bent rod to the adjustment screws of my vise grips to be like ones made by other brands. For essentially zero cost it really increases the utility of the pliers. They are much faster/convenient to use and you can adjust the pressure one handed. I recommend trying it if you haven’t alrea...

Portable Vise Stand
Here’s a portable machinists vise, largely based off a Ridgid tri-vise. It’s not heavy duty but is pretty handy to have around when working away from the shop

Torch holder with mod
Put a pipe nipple on my torch holder for filler wire. Tired of trying to pick them off the floor with gloves on.

Clamping Pipeliner Hoods for Mods
If you're planning to modify a pipeliner hood here's a way to hold the thing steady with a 2x4 in a vise. I recommend marking the left to right centerline before cutting out the lens holder also-there's not much to measure from once the lens holder is gone.

Modified Hand Truck
It may not count as a welding project but may save somebody's back-- I cut a 1/2"deep notch in a two-wheeled cart to move long heavy pieces with. You can get a 400lb beam up off the ground, wheel it through a man door and get up on sawhorses by yourself and never need to lift more than half the...

Simple Circle Cutting Guide
If anyone was looking for plans to make a circle cutter, it dawned on me that for $10 you can by a drywall circle cutter at a home improvement store and use the pivot part with some 1/4" square stock to make a decent one without a lot of machining work. I use the same pivot and have different g...

Re: Mixing in a Bit of Helium
Has anyone tried mixing in the balloon helium you can buy at Costco in the freon type canisters? I imagine it's not as clean/pure but I've been thinking about trying it.
Thanks

Aluminum Jon boat repair
I'd appreciate any tips on repairing Jon boats or pontoons. They are thin, dirty, out of position patches.
Thanks

Re: Great suggestion from a member...
I "borrowed" my wife's Ove-Glove" for my torch hand and combined with a tig finger it really works well. My fingers stay nimble and it feels like you could almost prop on the bead. Plus after using it once, she doesn't want the glove back so everyone's happy, kind of.

Re: Chipping Hammer-not a "chicken hammer"
Hi Johnathan, I preheated both pieces and tig welded with 309 stainless rod. I'm sure it's not recommended to weld on hammers but have been using it for many months and it seems to be holding together fine. In several of Jody's videos he jokes about not using the pick side of a chipping hammer, henc...

Chipping Hammer-not a "chicken hammer"
Chipping Hammer.jpg I found a very small estwing ball peen at a thrift store cheap and added half a chisel--works great and it serves dual purposes. Also-I've fount a mehanic's magnetic tray is a great place for the hot tail end of rods to keep them from getting in a tire or starting a grass fire, ...
