Making a rotary welding positioner

So recently I was able to purchase a 18 inch lathe face plate and 12 in 4 jaw chuck for 125 bucks. I really want to make my own heavy duty rotary welding positioner. My big question is what have you guys done for the motor and gearing? I'm thinking along the lines of an Ac motor with a VFD, but I wo...

This is a handrail that I am working on. 1 1/2 sch 80 with 1 1/2 .120 wall tube running through. The whole thing has set screws that lock it together

I am always curious about these machines. How do you find it compares to a miller or lincoln inverter machine?

Re: Debating on a TIG machine

I went and tried out my buddy's lincoln pt 375 and it was really nice. The arc seemed just as crisp as the syncrowave that I have tried. I think it's going to boil down to what I can get the best deal on.

One last post before I go to bed. These pics are a few months old but I am proud of them. One is a really nice ss hand rail we did in a house the other was a personal project I did to test my tig skills welding .030 ss to .030 bronze

Yeah, I don't know why it loaded that way. It was really the first project where I had to force myself to get comfortable in out of position and overhead tig welding. I have Jody's videos to thank for that.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

This is a front door that I made a little while back. Stainless steel frame with silicon bronze panels welded to the frame.

Finally got the picture upright.

Debating on a TIG machine

I am currently looking for a new(ish) tig machine for my shop. The ones I am debating between are the miller syncrowave 250dx, the miller dynasty 280dx, and the lincoln precision tig 275. I have not tried the larger lincoln tig welders, ( my buddy has a 375 that I am hoping to test in the next week)...

Re: Warpage and straightening.

Well, here are some examples of warpage that I have had. One was a stainless steel railing, 1x2x.083 cap rail with 2x2x.083 posts. All 304, and where the posts met that cap rail, it did't matter how much clamping I did, the cap rail still warped and bowed. I was using tig for this job. Second was a ...

Warpage and straightening.

I know Jody has touched on the subject of flame straightening/tig torch straightening, but I am curious for a little more in depth video on the subject. Like flame straightening box tube (thin and thick), solid stock, sheet ect. The reason I ask for this topic is because warpage seems to be the bane...
