Re: Taking a 6G test in 1 week
I started taking my test today. I was just going to prep it and get it ready for tomorrow but I started today I did the root from the 6 o clock position to the 12 and was shaky and started messing up due to being nervous. It wasn't as smooth on the face side but my teacher said it's OK on the root. ...

Re: HOW much is too much grinding on root pass ?
i know i took too much metal out and thats where the suck back happened . I also thought of using two stringer hot pass to focus heat on wagon tracks with 3/32 LH at 80-85 amps . I appreciate the feedback because I don't see many pipe welders to get feedback from . But this forum is really useful a...

Re: HOW much is too much grinding on root pass ?
I believe you should grind as little as possible, that way you don't have such a thin layer of metal for your hot pass to go over and won't risk disturbing the root. I like to grind until it looks decent, and pretty flat/clean without going overboard, the. USe a real hot hot pass to burn out anythin...

6G Tig welds
I started tig welding 8 days ago and have been progressing quickly in school. I lay out 1G 2G and 3G welds pretty good, nice flat caps with good tie ins and straight beads, good looking root as well. I grabbed a 4 inch pipe at school and attempted to do a 6G weld just for the hell of it. Surprisingl...

Re: Just started TIG welding at school
Hey Steve, thanks for the input on the picture. I was pretty surprised I was able to handle it that well, when I first started stick it took me a month for my welds to not look like nasty globs. Seriously, it was bad. my teacher even said he gave up on me at one point but finally everything clicked....

Re: Just started TIG welding at school
If you're in a booth, some schools ventilation systems are quite drafty. Maybe that's why he had you turn the gas up. Also, maybe he is trying to get better backside of the root quality if you are using forward travel with your butts on purge plates. I usually use 10-15 cfh indoors and adjust accor...
