I believe you should grind as little as possible, that way you don't have such a thin layer of metal for your hot pass to go over and won't risk disturbing the root. I like to grind until it looks decent, and pretty flat/clean without going overboard, the. USe a real hot hot pass to burn out anythin...

Hey Steve, thanks for the input on the picture. I was pretty surprised I was able to handle it that well, when I first started stick it took me a month for my welds to not look like nasty globs. Seriously, it was bad. my teacher even said he gave up on me at one point but finally everything clicked....

If you're in a booth, some schools ventilation systems are quite drafty. Maybe that's why he had you turn the gas up.
